Macs are based on Unix now. As soon as they run on Intel platforms next year, Im buying apple stock and switching. They are better. Hopefully they'll fix some things though, like making some better software / games.

They are already running intel chips. The new iMac and the replacement for the powerbook (the stupidly titled MacBook Pro) are both on intel as of Tuesday.

yes, but i would wait and get a later intel Mac - there isn't much software that will run natively on the x86 systems at the moment (because they said thay got them out 6 months before they said they would) so you'll have to run everything under rosetta for a while.

If you're going to get a MacBook Pro (That name!) wait and get one later on - they'll being out better ones very soon...

Apparently the reason for the name chance is that Apple want to get the word "Mac" into the names of all their products. Expect the iBook and iPod to get an equally daft name in the near future.

They might want to get Mac in to all the Mac names, but no way will the iPod get a name change. It's not a Mac, so why would it?

The iBook? MacBook basic? MacBook Lite? yuck yuck yuck!

- MacBook Pro naming. Steve Jobs: "It's a new name because we're kinda done with 'Power' and because we want 'Mac' in the name of our products." This would imply that the MacBook name may not only replace the PowerBook but the iBook as well. Also raises some questions about the continued use of the "PowerMac" name.

Taken from https://www.macrumors.com/pages/2006/01/20060111025256.shtml

I know it seems daft to change the iPod name but it looks like it will happen frown I can just see them unvieling the MacPod and it makes me want to cry. As for renaming the iBook, it makes me want to cry even more though. I love my white laptop and it seems daft to rename it as everyone knows exactly what it is. Mind you it was the same with the PowerBook and look what happened...

I can see why they might want Mac in the names of all the Macs, but not non-Mac things.

People say that but never do. Using a Mac is like heroin - once you start you can't easily stop wink

People who say stuff is like heroin/crack/[addictivedruggoeshere] have quite blatantly never done said drug.

This being HoP however, I think there's an exception to the rule. wink tongue

Well, if it workd the other way and using heroin is like a Mac...well....

But somehow I doubt it.

I would say that windows is like heroin - you can't get a way from it once you start. With a Mac and open formats you can change to any other system you like with out much fuss. When was the last time you tried to sync data from a MS program to an open standard (like outlook to iCal) without it going wrong?

Anyway, this thread has gone way off topic...

The flip4mac (what is it with names at the moment!?) program works ok, but I miss not being asked if I want to download the vid when it loads in a browser window. And it doesn't play some WMV files. I might go back to VLC...

yo,

yeah, I want a current ibook, they cute, but I recon im gonna have to get a cheaper Dell and strip out the os and run Linux instead..... smile

mad macs are just great, Ive been trying to crash mine for ages and the only thing that even half works is to open the terminal and type 'sudo kill 1' (try it at your peril, have a backup, shouldent compleatly kill it, but will make it do intresting things...)

*goes to check out VLC*
