I have recently got my mits on my very own bansai, a present from my girlfriend
mine's an 8 year old sageretia, and i love it
i was just wondering if there are any bonsai owners here on HOP?

i used to be into bonsai nate but never had my own
had several friends who owned a few though
i want to get one but not before i'm living in my own house...
i regularly drool over this website

Ive had three before, 2 died
and the other my mum tried to prune it but cut the main branches and it was really hard to get it to grow back, i now for christmas got my own growing kit so may try again An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind

I can see how Brit_Joe was confused....
I alwasy wanted on Bonsai. But I am afraid I'll kills it, and it will end up being a shabby stick in a pot - just like all my orchids are.

I had a Bonsai Potato once, but it shrivelled up and looked kinda nasty!

Bonsai are great but a lot more work than a lot of people think
They prefer to be watered a little every day rather than a lot of water a couple of times a week. If they are kept indoors they like having water lightly sprayed on their leaves.
Different trees require different methods of pruning and at different times of year so make sure you research the species that you have. Never prune too much off at one time as it can kill the tree.
Roots need pruning once a year and never remove more than a third of the roots. Use a chopstick (or something similar) to gently get the roots apart but be very gentle!
If you are wanting to grow bonsai from seed, put them in a bit of damp compost in a plastic food bag. Seal them in and put in the fridge for a few weeks, this helps fool the seeds into think it has been through winter so when you take them out of the fridge they will think it is spring and you will have more success germinating them.

well as i said its a sageretia, 8 years old, its leaves have started falling off and the main trunk of it is a bit loose, i got a book out from the library on general bonsai stooof, and it said that this is a bad thing, something to do with the roots......i just really dont want it to die, and im getting more and more paranoid about it. i will try and get some pictures of it and wack them up on here, but if docta or anyone else here can help i would appreciate it ALOT
ooh and i wouldnt mind some info on the japanese red maple aswell
if anyones thinking about buying one, its alot of work and alot of research to be done, but they're soooo worth it, go for it...they're great!

Bonsai are so much fun but yeah they are alot of work. you can buy older ones but obvoiusly they are more expensive. if the leaves are trning colour before the fall off, it's a mineral deficiency: try "blood fish and bone meal" very dilute.
uhmm... thy radiocativity for that traditional Audrey 2 look: plutonium is also popular, and easier to get hold of.. you know, go to iraq, there's obviously huge amounts there.

Sounds like it could be Phytophthora - it's a fungus that attacks the roots. Here in Brisbane there's products like Banrot and Fongarid that'll help to control root rot. These are only trade names, so unless you're here in Australia, there may be a differnet product with a different trade name that'll control the same problem. Products with the following active constituents (which can be found somewhere on the front label of the product) should help control root rot :- furalaxyl, etridiazole, thiophanate-methyl + etridiazole.
I hope this dosen't confuse you too much. Read the labels before you use in on your plants. Also if you've got a good garden centre near you, they should have staff that are more than willing to point you in the right direction, and if they know their stuff they should put you right on track.
