OK im trying to raise a couple of blood drives over this chrismas this will be the 3rd if all goes well if you do want give blood plz make a list below.This should only take about an hour giving blood is painless apart from a little prick...promise and they evan give you free mars bars!!!
I was thinking we could meet up in the morning and get a taxi there then go for a spin?Well let me know!! and dont put your name on unless you mean it

I wish I could I really do but being a gay man.. we are not allowed..
I'm going to refrain from ranting on as this topic annoys the hell out of me.. but its in their terms and conditions that "If you have had intercourse with the same sex you are not permitted to give blood"

no we actually are not allowed to give blood coz were gay.
i know its rude
but i want to give blood which is why i suggested the lieing on the forms and saying im straight.. i have done it before, when are you planning on givin the blood and where???

Mike you know I would but I've a funny blood type, barring being riddled with THC the Docs say I cant give it because its not good for my health.

Is that true? Gay people are not allowed to donate blood? Why? What's wrong with gay peoples blood? That's crazy!

The assumption is they are more likely to have undetected HIV than straight people because of their sexual activity and testing before giving blood isn't economically viable and results take too long (ie the opportunity is there for unprotected/infected sex in between test and results). Ditto intravenous drug users.
Personally, although it appears draconian and even prejudiced, I think it's the sensible approach.
I can't give blood because I've had hepatitis...

you see im immune to the hepatitises due to the regular check ups i keep being offered vaccines against things so there fore my blood is actually more helpful surely???
but like i said im going to come and give blood, i know i dnt have any STDs (very recent checkup and always use protection), and if they choose not to use it then it is to their discretion.
right so were meeting at 11am where???

I think that assumption about a gay man is unfair. Are all gay men promiscuous and careless? Are all straight people faithful to one partner and careful? That's kind of the assumption they are making with that rule.
Straight people having sex without condoms should be banned from giving blood too if that's the argument. They could have HIV as well! If the argument is the type of sex gay men have increases the chances of sexually transmitted diseases, well there are plenty of straight couples out there indulging in the same practice. Are they banned from giving blood too?
What if a gay man is celebate. Are they still stopped from giving blood?
Sorry for ranting but I think that rule is stupid. Are they going to be stopping people that have eaten Beef in the UK in the last 20 years from givin blood so the risk of passing CJD on is stopped too?
Soon it will only be vegan virgins that have never had an injection/operation, never travelled anywhere, never had a tattoo or peircing, not been given antibiotics...infact not even had any infection ever........

well, skully, if u go to france and want to give blood there, they do ask you whether u lived in englad during the whole BSE crisis time. that means that my dad cant give blood in france and I cant either, cos im his daughter. i wasnt anywhere near the country when it happened, but im the daughter of someone who was, so the french wont have my blood (silly french ppl). i think its just paranoia because blood is such

sorry, a delicate thing to work with. they dont want crazy insane ppl coming up with court cases etc. i do think that there is unfairness, and the system should be changed, but there is some basis to what they say. the rest is paranoia

I heard somewhere that they have started to test donated blood for HIV, or did I hear wrong?
Oh and loki, if people dont want to or cant give blood than its not your fault, you tried wich is all that counts.

excellent debate and good point joei think they should screen all blood anyway, whilst they are screening it to find out the blood type lol
us gay men could help save hundreds of lives and becasue of the government rules we are not able to do so and therefore hundreds of people die a day.... what else can we do but sit here and watch our families and friends die coz we cnt give blood or be a donar.

I'm willing to give blood, if they will let me.
I've had major sergery under general anaesthetic 3 times since 1 dec 04 as well as almost needing a transfusion after the last one in august. im also on a waiting list for another operation around easter time.
if they don't mind all that ill come along

edit to add if its just behind the university/mri on the juncyion of plymouth grove and brook street you can get a bus from picc gardens to the university then walk down grafton street, be easier and cheaper than a taxi.
