Take your toy and go home. By now she should be able to convert the program into the language that she uses. The least she could have done was to try and then when it didn't work ask for your help to plug the holes.

but anyway, ben, couldn't you use the "i'm sorry but i don't program in ________" excuse to get her to stop asking for the code to be ported over to soemthing else?

What's your supervisor like if s/he has let a student get that far into a project without picking up on these errors. I'd be casting around for a new one at this point.

A negative result is a perfectly valid one. As long as she's not labouring under the missapprehension that her results are pretty good then saying "I tried this method, it didn't really work. This may work better" is fine, if she hasn't got a huge amount of time left on the project then it may be too late for her to change methodology anyway.

Asking for help is fine. Asking for someone else to do work for her is a bit rich.

There is a slight possibility that I am not actually right all of the time.

We've got a report to do, with 5 or 6 different supervisors, after the 1st year of the PhD (plus regular presentations in postgrad seminars). When the committee gets the impression that you're not up to the job, they can a. tell you and ask you to improve what's not good enough (= get a better idea of the topic, use different methods, learn to think for yourself) and then report again, or b. they recommend you don't continue your PhD because the way you work there's a good chance you won't get it in the end.

It can be quite mean, with some people trying to tear you into pieces, and there's also a time when your supervisor's not present so they can find out if he/she's actually doing all your work and thinking for you, or you can say if you're not happy with them.

I'd suggest you introduce that, but it's so much work and not really all that nice wink

i reckon that it had to be done anyway. from what i understand, part of the goal of a phd is to contribute new knowledge to a body of knowledge. but if that new knowlege is crap, it dosen't contribute anything to the overall, thus requiring the judicious some form application of smackdown in one form or another. smile

the whole point in doing a phd is ur supposed to become really specialised in one area in that particular area ur supposed to know all the answers ..... did u read what i wrote about her proposed method of doing it? its quite possibly the worst approach you could go about trying to solve the problem ...... I told my supervisor how to solve the problem because i knew the answer ......

hes been in america the last little while and busy organising applying for grants securing patents for the work of other students/she hasnt been going to meetings.

The really sad bit is i wrote it in c++ and the language she wanted was matlab which is based on c, the syntax is almost identical ..... i simply said no out of principle, however im thinking if shes really stuck of getting her to pay me to code it into a nice little dll file which effectively becomes a black box

Ben , I do understand the point of a Phd. If it was me and someone saw a flaw in my work , pointed it out to me and suggested a fix I would be very grateful.
If however, that person told my supervisor first, I would be pissed off.

Jeffhigh- It is my grand presumption that you're prolly smarter than her tho...

And unfortunatly some people are the other way around, I'm going to bet Birgit could find some examples of this and I know I've met them!

I dunno, its safer to go to the supervisor first since there's a record... a year and a half in to be that rubbish, I dunno....
