Ok so as we all know, poi is an ancient tradition which has been around for ages and appealed to many people throughout the years- and many more people are picking them up every year. Just one look at the number of members registered here shows the popularity of spinning across the globe....

It seems to me tho that lately poi are everywhere- all these christmas catalogues and stuff that get shoved through my letterbox have setts of tail poi in them, everytime I turn on the telly someone is spinning a weave, and I have come across newspaper articles about spinners meets and stuff. Poi are the latest fashion accessory.

The thing is I feel a bit weird about it.. on the one hand I'm like, this is great, everyone should have a go at this, it's so fun and good for body and mind etc. and the more the merrier type of thing. But then on the other hand I feel like some of the mystery and magic is being taken away... some of the stuff I have seen on tv seems to be people showing off trying to spin REALLY fast and stuff but doin v basic tricks v messy...it feels like it's all getting a bit competitive, and people picking them up and going "look what I can do and you can't aren't I great." I just think that's a really ugly attitude to have, and not one I'd like to see associated with poi.

I don't want to sound like a right miserable moo but that is the way it seems to me right now and I wondered what anyone else thought about it, or if anyone even had thought about it...?

When it comes to the influx of new people I always think along these lines... There will always be noobs who come into the art all the time, some because of fashion, others for the love of doing something new and different and there will always be the 'old guard', the spinners who spun before the fashion and will spin afterward. As long as the 'old guard' keep spinning then there will always be the hardcore spinners that are required to keep osmething going after the fad has died out.

Personally I think there's always a bit of "look what I can do" when it comes to poi but I guess its part of human nature. I think the difference between most poi spinners and most other people is that we're all willing to tell others how to perform new and interesting moves. In my view the slower spinners are often the most artistic and controlled so the new thing of speed over style isn't really the way to go.

Publicity is a good thing. If poi gets a lot of press then it will make getting gigs much easier. I spun LEDs in a university organised disco on Friday and got a pretty good reception and a possible gig.

I also think that as long as you can merge styles and techniques together in a unique way then it really doesn't matter whether there are lots of people spinning or not. Its your own style that you should really worry about, not everyone elses.

Have faith in what you can do and respect for what you can't

I sometimes feel like that too.
But then when people ask me to teach them I just think I may be teaching the next poi guru or something smile
Although a fair amount of the people I teach don't stick with it, and most of those that do manage a weave and butterfly and thats it shrug

I agree to all thats been said. Its like, i started because my friend who had been travelling the world came back and showed me a few moves and was like oh its just something i picked up from some people we met. But I saw and was like... thats so kewl, so i tried, and i failed!!!

As for showing off, I only really show poi to people with fire, and thats more because they ask to see it rather than me wanting to show off. But ye, I spose I'm only justifying wat I do cos I've only been spinning since august and still consider myself a noob, and not an old guard type.... lol

anyway ye! biggrin

Asena - I think of myself as a noob too but beause of the things that I'm trying and the way that I spin I'm advancing a lot faster than most of the people that I know. I've personally introduced half a dozen people to poi so in some ways I'm contributing to the 'epidemic'. I find that the best spinners are the ones who are willing to put the time to learn all of the variations of the moves they can do which, in my view sets the old guard apart from the noobs so in that sense I'm more of an old guard spinner even though I've only been spining since July.

In my view 'advancing' with poi is the exploration of moves to find variations and interesting little quirks within each movement that can be exploited to make the performance more unique before moving on to the next move and doing the same. Perhaps that will seperate the true spinners from the fashion spinners.

Well said, I practice most days trying loads of random things with moves, to be fair, hardly any of them work out but sometimes you get something that looks funky and you think ye! i like that!!

This is so much more of social discussion than chat! lol biggrin

I've spent most of the past few days trying to isolate antispin flowers and doing random isolation butterflies (isolating ttn, high and low wave etcetc) and changing the timings on moves. I only know two or three other spinners who are trying similar things to me.

I Didn't no whether to put this in discussion or chat but plumped for here in the end...
I agree with all that everyone has said too, and I do think publicity is a good thing, but maybe its just the stuff I have seen which is bad- and like I said the attitude with it.
I am a very private spinner, I prefer to do it alone and it is more a voyage of personal discovery for me, maybe this will change if I ever have the courage to spin in front of others but the more I see of this one-up-manship the less I want to come out and do it.
Maybe you're all right tho and in a few years time I will feel happy and free with my flow when all these show offs hardly-used poi are getting dusty!
Ouch! I didn't mean that to sound that bad

So what...?

There's always new trends... think of how many people are running, rock-climbing, playing guitar etc. Why be p!ssed off at them just because they didn't invent it if they enjoy doing it?

About people being crap - who cares! You can't be the best at everything, and whether you're learning, or just happy with the low level you're at, who has the right to say that's wrong?

And about getting competitive, you don't have to be. Take any sport and performance, and you'll have people doing it for fun, people doing it to show off, people doing it to win something and show they're the best, and those who do it to relax, meditate, clean themselves from stress etc.

Poi is great, and anyone who just stands there doing a weave and a butterfly, as long as they have fun I'm with them smile

im still really a begginner slowly getting it there coz im learning by myself and there are days where i can get really p***ed off with myself when i see mindblowing videos of these amazing spinners. But thats only for a split second coz when i go out in the garden and do me weave, all of that disapears and i feel great coz i love doing it, physically, its improved me so much!

The closest thing I've seen to poi on TV is this stick on a string that comes up automatically. Like if a yo-yo was a stick. It's a weird thing. Anyway, just the other day I went to a party and snapped some glowsticks. I guess by nature glow sticks are meant to be faster, and I had very limited room and a glass chandellier above my head, so I kept it verery simple.

It was my worst performance ever, but after I finished people came up to me and asked me how I did it and that type of thing. I directed them to HoP, but I doubt they'll ever come.

anyway, the point is that I leant out my toys after too and I saw quite a few horrible weaves going fast and hitting people, I agree, faster is not better. It can be nice, but it needs control which is learned from going slow. Anyway, thats my two cents.

Don't mind me, just passing through.

Again, I've only been spinning for a year and a half but in that time, I've definately noticed an increase in spinners. When I first started at juggling club, only 8 months ago, there was only 3 of us spinning poi regularly. Now there is at least 10. Unfortunately in a way, it's meant I've had to teach soooo many people (probably reaching into the 50's by now), the same couple of moves. Although I enjoy teaching, I do sometimes wish that a few would progress past these basics, so I can teach something different, although a few are getting there now, they all seem to be around learning reels, I seem to end up practically running workshops at the juggling club sometimes! (much to the dismay of the hardcore jugglers!). Although there are advantages.

For every one new poi person who comes to the juggling club, at least 5 have asked about it, mainly by contacting me through HoP, and then never shown up, or stayed for about one week. So I think although poi spinning is becomming more well-known, less people than you think actually take it up.

However, it does worry me that it may become a fashion, as that brings a lot of negative associations for me. As a person I am always determined not to do something because its in fashion, unless I really want to do it, particularly because I don't like the connotations that come with fashion. I do really value the mystery of poi and it would be a shame if everyone took it up and poi lost that. Also If it turns into fashion, then it means it will go out of fashion, which worries me the most. I already get a few people who 'dis' poi for various reasons, and I fear that a fall out of fashion would only make this worse. It could turn poi spinning from a positive thing to a negative thing in many peoples minds. However, hopefully this would end after a few years.

None of this would stop me spinning poi, but I don't want to have to put up with negative comments and/or patronising tones everytime I tell someone I do poi.

FOUR (me) i've been doing/am doing all of the above. i have been REALLY into experimenting with timings and trying to nail isolations and such in different ways. much fun.

"Spinning is for hippies, all the cool kids juggle!" is the one that I get lots at circus soc. Although, to be honest, all the spinners I know at circus soc (including me) are geeks, except for maybe one or two.

I've yet to see it become a fashion, although I have to agree more people are learning it. It's definately a good thing!

We've got diablo spinners, unicyclists, jugglers, poi spinners, staff spinners, balancers and cj-ers. We meet up once a week to have a play and a socialise. We occasioanally do shows or workshops, but it's really chilled and informal.

All you have to do is buy some kit for everyone to use, like staves, poi, balls, etc. and have a venue, and you're sorted!

It became fashionable about 2 years ago. You should've seen the scene explode eek It was absolutely sickening....

Bloomin' BBC footage from Glasto this year didn't help any. Continually showing the looped footage of a girl who really couldn't do a weave messing up, hour upon hour, all weekend behind the hosts of the show coverage.....

I don't see why anyone should stop spinning just cos it's getting popular. Maybe it'll just be another fad, like yo-yos were (And they've come into, and gone out of, fashion at least 3 times when I've been in school). I guess people who did yo-yo-ing before the fad were pretty pissed when it became popular...

But really, if everyone is relaxed and stuff, then what's the problem? Just teach them how you spin, and then they'll spin well and happily. Congratulations, you've made someone's day. smile

After much consideration, I find that the view is worth the asphyxiation.

Nice one jon, i knew i'd seen a thread like this several times before, and i think blue peter was even mentioned in it.

In terms of where poi is going and if its getting too popular, at the moment I can happily walk into town and down to parks and most likely not see someone spinning, if it gets to the stage where every time you walk out on a summers day and there are more people poi-ing than playing football then its got too popular.

But for the time being I do what I do, I have my friends who I do it with, thats all I need, and Im not going to worry.
