anyone know any decent way of setting them on fire? i keep finding that if i light them with deoderant then they just go out as soon as i do a thing with them. and the cards+ paraffin experiments were a massive let down

assuming your gonna be doing flourishes / torched and restored type stuff, you'll want to be using a fuel that will burn by itself, without a wick. problems with these types of fuels is that they burn hotter than kero / parafin. zippo will work, and ive been told a 50 - 50 mix of kero and shellite. im not sure what shellite is in other countrys, but its labelled 'petroleum spirits'. as per usual, do not even think of using petrol.

cheers, pete biggrin

Posted:They do make 'fire paste' as a survivalist fire starter... just flammable goo... although I wouldn't go flinging it around, that would be bad.. I use vaseline and cotton balls as well when I'm camping, but I don't have any vaseline laying around right now to test flammablitiy on its own.. Again, you don't want to be flinging goo around.. and DEFINATLY wash your hands after applying before burning..

Mmmm....sterno... fire in a can..

Posted:excellent ideas, dudes, cheers.
guess i need the sides of the cards to be on fire, if i put something on top of the deck and light it it makes it quite limited in what i can do, any form of cut puts it out.
i'll sort something, a few experiments with different fuels i think

Might be a bit fiddly

Good cards (like bike's air cushion finish) are coated in a varnish to stop them sticking (and for flourishes, etc). I presume it's the varnish that doesnt burn?

Posted:So something acidic might eat into the varnish and allow just the paper to catch light. Try leaving it for a while in some coke, or other brand of fizzy soft drink.

nail varnish remover would take off your varnish, but is far too flammable when wet, so you'd have to be really careful to check it's try, and would take a lot of work for each set.
Be about the same price as coke, cos you'd need less of it. Also comes in smaller, more transportable bottles.

very handy.

Given the title of this thread, that may well not be a problem tongue

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

a subtle, but important distinction, i think you'll agree.

Posted:hmm, in my opinion, it'd be best to go for the US playing card company cards, and steer away from the plastic coated kind. plastic + fire aint too good. perhaps roughening the cards with sand paper prior to adding a fuel of some sort?

cheers, pete biggrin

Posted:Re. what to do with the cards once they're on fire, check out the book "Cards as Weapons" by magician Ricky Jay. It's all about how to do various tricks with throwing cards - boomerangs, throwing multiple cards, etc. The book is quite rare (and expensive) but you can probably find a copy through library interloan.

and yeah, pretty much don't do anything once on fire, wave them about a bit, then put them out in some way, i'll have to see about throwing some about out of the fan

A couple of balls short of a full cascade... or maybe a few cards short of a deck... we'll see how this all fans out.
