I've no idea what sort of tangent they want me to go off on...

maybe they are talking about how when columbus arrived, he found a new world, ut he brought with him teh churh and ancient foundation ideas about medicine, culture, and society from spain and europe?

I'd try and look at what Europe took from the "new world" (gold, cocoa, tobacco, potatoes, veggies... you get the idea!), and what it gave back (different governments and gods, diseases as you say, trade (= getting stuff for free and selling it expensively in Europe) etc). Given that it's "the americas", you can incorporate the north as well, as a place where people went to practice their religion, and that they then completely took over.

Em you should possibly bring in some of the differences between the colonies eg france and spain and the fact that they all imposed their views and culture (as well as their petty battles) also the deseases would be a good aspect to talk about
