A little early perhaps, but it can't help to have a butchers...

This time next year is when the college start pushing us to start applying for Uni, too start in autumn term '07

I'm currently at a college in Eastbourne doing a National Dimploma in Art and Design. In a weeks times is my first assesmant, at which I will present my last 9 weeks worth of mini projects and choose my specialism. Which will be 3D crafts - ceramics, metal/wood/glass work etc.

I'm a bit hard pressed to find a website where I can search for a Uni by course. I'm currently on www.direct.gov.uk, which is helpful, but dosn't really give me what I want.

I'd preferably like to go to a Uni in the South West-ish. Uni of Sussex, Brighton and Kent are waaay to close to home. Me being me I don't want to be right in the middle of a city. Big crowds, noise, pollution, no sea! Bleurgh.

Which is why I've had my eye on a contemporary crafts course at Falmouth Uni which I quite like the look of. Near the sea, won't be too..horrid, and of course lovely spinners biggrin

Some help would be muchly appriciated, in the form of suggestions of uni's with 3D kind of courses (because everybody just has common knowledge of those rolleyes) if possible or helpful websites. A search has thrown up nothing, even though I vaguely remember last year something being posted about Uni's shrug

Thank yee

smile

My suggestion would be to go to as many open days as physically possible - a prospectus can only tell you so much, and you'll never know if you like the feel of a place unless you wander around it for a bit.
Even if you're not really thinking of them as possible places to go, have a look around Brighton and Kent - you may well get a load of good advice from the people running the open days.

Oh, and it's 'prospecti' wink tongue

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

(amazing for the course you want - i have a lot of friends on it, and amongst them are three who have transferred from universities across the country and find it preferable.....)

Incidentally maybe they would have told you about all the UCAS resources a little closer to the time? Definately the most helpful, current, correct list you will ever need and the one that you will apply via smile

But yes, do not follow the Kieron example of last week to apply guessing. Visit the places first, find decent music, make sure you can find paraffin and then go look at the uni.

I, like you, specialsed into 3-D design on my foundation course. I was also going to do a applied arts/crafts/contemporary crafts course (all different names mean the same thing!). But then I realised that all the courses specialised into one area in the 2nd year onwards. So I knew I would end up doing ceramics, just a year later than I would if I specialised straight away. This meant that I would have a years less experience in that material than my peers, and after talking to many tutors, at many different courses, including the ones running the contemporary crafts courses, they all said the same thing. Specialise straight away as you get more experience in your specialism, instead of basically studying another foundation course.

Although I would have enjoyed doing an extra year outwith my specialism, I am glad I specialised straight away, as there are a lot of skills to learn in ceramics, that take a long time, and you need two years before your final year to gain them.

However, everyone is different, and what was the best for me, may not be the best for you, I just wanted to make sure you were aware of this. You may not be sure what material you would want to specialise in, but I suspect that because you already know that you want to do craft, you know deep down which material you would like to specialise in. (Also remeber that even when you specialise in one material, it doesn't mean you can't use any other material. Other than ceramics I've used glass, metal, plaster, silicon, and others I can't remember!).

Here are some good courses and institutions I know of from my own experience looking round and word of mouth etc.

Contemporary crafts/applied arts.

Manchester Met.-Brilliant course- one of the best but very rural location.

Nottingham. -ended up not looking round, but a lot of my friends went there, it's meant to be a very good course.

Surrey Institute of art and design.- loved this place when I looked round, not in a city, depends what your looking for. Wish I went there!

Cumbria,- meant to be quite good, my course has contacts with them and did a joint project.

Glass-,

Sunderland! - if you want to do glass this is THE best institute in the UK to go to, best facilities, best teaching. Now the ceramics side has been vastly improved by a new tutor. Can't recommend this course enough.

Surrey- good for most things really.

Edinburgh- have a good glass department, but may be too far if you don't want to mov a long way from home.

Ceramics-
You have to choose which ceramics course you do carefully, some focus on the funtional, others are much more open and sculptural, also beware a lot of ceramics courses are struggling, many have shut down the last few years. This is the case with a few other craft specialist areas too.

Glasgow sahool of art

Surrey (again!)

Bath spa

Cumbria

Stoke on trent

Avoid Buckinghamshire Chilterns. Although Its good for a lot of courses, I looked round the ceramics and glass epartment and it was not very good. I've seen a lot better.

You can talk to me/pm me if you want anymore information, especially about ceramics, but also about other crafts specialisms. Also if you want to know if I know anything about a particular course. Good Luck!

p.s. It's never too early to start looking, apply as early as you can etc. saves a lot of stress later when you're busy doing other things. It can take a lot of research to find and decide the right course for you. And there are a lot of open days to go to and look round. Anyway, this is really long already, and I could go on for a lot longer. Let me know if you want any other advice!

Funny this should be bumped the day I was thinking of bumping it myself.
Have been looking a little bit into the Buckinghamshire glass and ceramics course. Which looks fantastic, unfortunatly they only take 25 studants a year :o

And Vikki? You sound like a little clever clogs for getting into all of those - well done! bounce

Don't worry, thats actually quite a big intake for a ceramics\glass course.

If thats Buckinghamshire Chilterns, I really wouldn't recomend it there. I looked round a lot of ceramics (and glass courses), and I wasn't particularly impressed.

The work I saw produced by the students there wasn't of the same standard of a lot of the other places I looked round, particularly on the ceramics side of it.

If you want to do ceramics and glass your best option is definately Sunderland, best course of this type in the country.

This is just my opinion, and its about three years since I looked round so things could have changed there. But I do know for a fact that Sunderland is the best place to go, though looking around myself, and what my tutors said.

Your options, unfortunately, are a bit limited if you specifically want to do ceramics AND glass. Seperatly, they get a bit better, but not much. You might have to be prepared to travel a long way, if you want to go somewhere that is good.

But definatley make sure you look round everywhere, preferbly before you apply if possible, or at least at your interview when thats not practical, and ask lots of questions. You're choosing them, more than they're choosing you due to the small amount of applicants you get.

I agree with you there, it's pretty cool. Though if I had to live in a city, I wouldn't go any bigger than Exeter, which is even cooler...and there's a Uni there.

I did a taster week at Cambridge over the summer. Hated it. They made me do maths ubblol

Even if I was clever enough to get into Cambridge or Oxford the only course available for me to do would be art history. And a one hour lecture a week with a pompus prick is enough for me already..

I'm at the Uni of Sussex. I live out in the countryside, which is where the uni is, about 6 miles from the city. It's beautiful, and the city being Brighton, there's plenty of sea.

It's a great uni, brilliant social scene etc but I have no idea about 3D courses or anything... I do English Lit and Philosophy.

Got some mates who studied in Falmouth, they all loved the place but not where they were studying. All 4 of them (each doing a different course) decided, on finishing the course, that they'd never think of working in the area they'd studied for... so make sure the course is what you want.

Falmouth's obviously great, though, if you don't mind boats and pasties coming out of your ears.
