Our priority is to deliver a great convention, and that is what we are

concentrating on doing!

You're not going to make me explain what a 'do-opoly' is to a burner are you? wink

yep smile

It's actually one of my favorite burningman mantras.

It means if you want something done, it's not a democracy where you vote for what's done, nor is it a monarchy where someone decides what everyone else does... it's a 'do-opoly' where you just do it.

It's really refreshing when there's nobody around saying "Somebody should..." or "There should be... " ... you want something done, DO IT.

I think this is a major advantage of the burner mentality over just buying a ticket for an event and bitching about how it could have been better.

*[disclaimer: I've never actually been to Burningman but I've long since been a member of the New York City community and organized and done many things at local burner events and regional burns.]

With all due respect, I think that mentality is one of the major advantages that the burner crew has over, let's say it's UK counterparts. The amount of DOing absolutely crazy art instalations and such is unparalleled. Keep in mind, I've written pages and pages praising the specific advantages of the UK community (See: The London Factor) so I don't feel badly about siteing one advantage of the US Burner crew. biggrin

With that in mind, I'd love to see more crazy crap at EJC.

Molly and I just met last night about how we could bring some sillyness and love to EJC... now what are you all going to DO?

Seven club juggling vs. moving pirate boat built on the back of a school bus... I'm gonna have to give it to the pirates....

But you know I've got all kinds of love for the object manipulators. It is a JUGGLING festival afterall.

And I'm certainly not recommending turining into a burner event. Just borrowing some ideas the same way that geeky poi spinning has been borrowed by the burner crews.

I really really really hope I get to see it this year.

Sorry, I'm getting off topic and feeling bad about it.

I love EJC and want to spread more love and will be DOing stuff to make EJC better even if that just means bringing hoops. Or plates.

the thing i noticed most about european juggling things and spinner fests vs. u.s. burner events was the lack of large amounts of bass. here in the u.s. the sound system and music (dj, etc.) comes FIRST and then the event is organized from there. even little spin jams on the beach have drummers and/or sound systems present. methinks the americans are more into the trance of the music, whereas the euros are more into the socialising and the trance of juggling.

Well, actually, I think it's more than that. I think here in the US the firespinners are a subsection of the party whereas over there they are the party. When everyone's in the conclave, there is no conclave. wink

But we're wandering dangerously off topic.

Unless we redirect to "What elements of other gatherings can we encorporate to make EJC even better?!!!"

It is so good to hear people talking in these terms! Remember that the jugglers juggle (and the spinners weavesmiley) ARE the EJC. You decide what it is really, we just provide the space. So what are you going to fill it with? ( i want art-cars. i've been feeling a longing for the playa for a while now. Maybe next year *sigh*)

And Dr Fandango - for a moment there you had me really worried! Coming a day after the bad news that the Arts Council doesn't deem us worthy of a grant, frown my energy levels are low enough!

Thanks to all you lovely people for your continued support hug

That's utterly ridiculous, surely one of the biggest conventions to hit these shores, and the council don't offer a grant?!

We need more music. Especially at the 'fire pit' wherever that is.

And us Hula hoopers need music as well.

BUT, "Could we" isn't going to get stuff DONE.

Gabe, you want to organize guest DJ spots and organize a sound system? Do it. Make it happen.

Molly and I have been brainstorming about what we want to DO at EJC. Rather than joining us, it would be amazing if people started organizing into their own groups and projects now.

Get a crew, get some ideas, divy up the work, and then make it happen.

DJs, Costumes, Art, Shade structures, cheap free handout gifts, food, drinks, workshops, and whatever else you can get yourself to get off your butt and DO.

Any other leaders up for the challenge?

Could you PM me your Indo contact? I'm not necessarily into bitching about who didn't give us cash - but you can never have too many friends in the press.

We did have some good news though, Cork Kerry Tourim, the regional part of Filte Ireland, the tourism board, are giving us a grant towards marketing costs.

And everyone, go, create stuff, bring costumes, make shade structures, bring musical instruments.... biggrin I can't wait to see Kla perform ubbrollsmile

And Dunc, did you really have to have the second coolest thing on this summer at exactly the time that i'm going to be competely stressed out and unable to go spank

i wrote some workshops already biggrin

and i already got off my butt an DO'ed something - learning to juggle five balls sitting down was far too hard.

does that mean i can kick back and just watch nyc building that dome thingy when i get to ireland...? wink

seems to me bm and ejc are two completely different kinds of event, no?

if we're comparing a euro festival to burning man, should we not pick one with the same ethos or central themes (music, creativity, freedom of expression)?

the nowhere festival immediately comes to mind (clickclick) or the boom festival in portugal maybe...?

do-ology's do indeed sound like they rock and all that, but foe me, the only doing to be done at the ejc will be the juggling, the spinning and the watching of the juggling and spinning whilst doing the drinking, the talking and the smoking ubbrollsmile hug wink

*Disclaimer*
YesIUnderstandThatEJCIsNotTheSameAsBurngingman... but I thought it would be nice to borrow some of the nice ideas from one and give it to the other. I've spend quite a bit of time taking the technical poi that I'd learned in the UK and tried to spread it to the notoriously untechy New York crowd. I just got back from PDF where two years ago I taught intro and advanced workshops to people who've since gotten SO MUCH better and have fully embrased the geek within them.

The FIRST thing I did was take what I loved about the UK community and try to spread it to my crew back home. Now I'm trying to return the favor by taking the ELEMENTS of the community that I'm a part of here and spread it out there.

 Written by:

So what you're saying is that we should burn down EJC and have Burningman instead?!

No, I'm just saying it might be nice to stick up some decorations and spend some time preparing our camping areas and planning fun stuff for us to do in the evenings when there aren't workshops.

 Written by:

So what you're saying is that you hope all the jugglers die because you hate them?

No, I'm not saying anything against the jugglers or juggling. I love juggling and jugglers and that's why I spend hundreds of dollars to fly out there to go to EJC. EJC is my favorite festival. There are parts of EJC that could be even more fun since we have a set community that could all work together to make it even better.

 Written by:

So you hate EJC and you think it sucks?

No, I just said I love it.

 Written by:

... and that's why you hate Irish people?

No, I never.... Oh jeez... I'm just planning on bringing stuff to make the camping experience more fun. That's it.

 Written by:

So essentially you're suggesting that we're no longer allowed to juggle at EJC?

spank

I will post more on what I'm planning on bringing and see if other people want to have other ideas on making the camping experience more fun. If you're not interested in making the camping experience more fun then you need not pay attention to what I'm doing.

so, you came to the uk, found lots of techy poi moves and went back to america to teach it all there - a commendable service indeed.

in return we get:

getting nagged at for being lazy euro-bums just didn't seem like much of a 'giving back' to me wink

i pointed out that if you were looking for euro festivals that have elements of the burning man community within them, there are a few that are already established - they have lots of jugglers and spinners in attendance and they also share the fire-centric attitude to the arts that bm seems to have.

if you don't want to hear about them, and would rather try to apply similar ideals to the ejc, that's cool hug

i just hope this doesn't mean i'm banned from camphulaboogie before its even been made... frown
