Hello, for those of you who know me, and those of you who don't, for years shyness has been a major inhibitor for a lot of things, and although i have made myself aware of it, it still is a day to day battle.

I am currently in my last year of a BA in illustration, an have decided to specialise in the area of illustration for children (still deciding on my age range), and want to write an illustrate a book proposal(manuscript) based on shyness and social anxiety to make kids of today aware of its presence and how to help people combat it.

I will be grateful if anyone could share their experiences with shyness, combating it and you might have help your friends be more confident in themselves.

I would also be grateful if anyone could suggest any helpful sources of researce i could get, like a good book you once read or a website, or tv/radio programe etc

Thank you loverly people biggrin

Oh and if anyone has any tips on story writing i would be very grateful too biggrin

Yes indeedy! I went to Gwithian earlier in the year but managed to injure myself a couple of days before. I spent most of the time in my tent feeling miserable- and as a result only spoke to about 5 people. I am quite worried about people recognising me at play and assuming was being anti-social and that I don't want to talk to anyone. I'm quite worried about play in general, and yet I am looking forward to it as well. It's an odd feeling.....

Miscorinthian I'm really scared about play aswell, but I really want to go!!

I want to socialise with anyone and everyone, yet the idea just makes my tummy ill. Last year, I went to the Big Green Gathering, I spent the whole journey saying "I'm scared" and the first day in my tent, trying to calm myself and get to terms with the amount of people.

In relation to this thread though.

I find my reasons for social anxiety are for several reasons. Not wanting to make a fool of myself, not wanting to stand out, afraid that my anxiety makes others around me nervous aswell, lacking in confidence and self esteem, afraid that people won't/don't like me.

Also, if your target audience will be young children, it would probably be better if you try and get this information from their perspective. Children's social anxiety and symptoms can be different to ours. Also shyness is sometimes misinterperated for social anxiety disorder.

Yes, well im in love with someone. I just dont know if i can tell them. I believe its just shyness, i dont want to blame them... but i think my parents are the cause of my exclusion around people. They werent the best of parents, they did alot of things to me, some i will never forget in my life. I just sometimes believe that i cant trust some people. For example, if you come to shake my hand, or put your arm around my shoulder, by instinct i will grasp your arm and move a few steps back. I find that if i join a large group consisting of people who know eachother, it wont be easy to introduce myself. But if you get to know me, and i can trust you, im pretty wild. Im up for skipping into abercrombie and fitch with a gay voice and asking for ripped pants. (nothing against abercrombie shoppers, its just one of the funniest things to see their expressions) good luck on your book, and unfortunatly, I am not a adequate writer, actually im kind of dull... Unless the topic is romance wink. Much love everyone

Hmm..maybe trust has alot to do with it- I find it very difficult to trust people, possibly also to do with parenting...interesting coincidences...

I was going to suggest maybe a "shyness awareness" meeting up at play, seeing as a couple of us are worried about it- but then I thought we would probably be too shy to turn up! ubblol

I may not be going to Play after all. I didn't realise how soon it was. A few months back I somehow set it in my head that it was in August. frown

So I'm not sure wether I should go or not. I wouldn't have enough time to organise my friends to come up with me, So It would just be me and my other half. :S

Should I not add this? Well, I feel like I should. I mean no one has ever been the least bit unfriendly at a HoP meet, but I definately felt overwhelmed. And a lot of people didn't really tend towards being forward- The people I talked to were nice but I guess I've always felt left on the outside at big meets. That said, I'm clearly a minority opinion. But it still makes things kinda hard. I think I'm going to stick to tiny meets in the future like when I went to brighton and I can start to relax and figure things out. I mean, it'll be better when I'm feeling less shy, but still!
