I found a spinning/burning group in the MD/DC/NoVA area who practices and burns every other week. I hope they reply to my email soon and weather permits the August 8th meeting to happen! Making the hike from DE would be so worth it and a good activity on a regular basis. grin

Huh. This probably won't mean anything to anyone, but I just realized that Quine's referential indeterminacy theses uses a trick that's a staple of category-theoretic practice. He trades on the indistinguishability of isomorphic objects to reject one ontology (considered as a category of functions between kinds of entities) in favor of an equivalent, skeletal version of essentially the same ontology.

And if I've just thought of using category theory to study ontological problems and formal semantics, that means there must already be literature on the subject, calling out to me.... *starts googling*

I'll never go back to college, I have an expensive piece of toilet paper that has put me more behind than anything else. All I have gained is the ability to have complex conversations and a better grounding to form my own thoughts about the world around me, interpersonal tools are good just not worth the time and money IMO. I am however toying with the idea of culinary school if I don't decide to have kids within the next few years...

Complicated legal situations are ordinarily catch 22s, I feel for ya grrrl! hug

It's not about the degree and what it's worth. It's about discovery and having the time, the structure, and the resources to get really deep into something fascinating and exciting.

Believe me, I've been pursuing my interests outside of school for the last five years, but i'm still not on par with a second year grad student; maybe not even with a first year. The schooling makes more of an impact than just the degree it produces.

That's very true, I just don't have cash to invest in interests that can't even get me a job without a phd. My husband and I both are disgusted with the student loan situation and degrees that are essentially useless for getting a good job so we live the military life.

If you can manage the hit to your credit score and wallet, go for it! And if not don't sweat it is my current motto. yes

In Australia (for aussie citizens) we have HECS or whatever it is called now where you dont have to pay your loan until you earn a certain amount but if you work in the field you study in you dont have to pay it back until you stop. makes university worth while if you can handle being poor for 5/6years while you study

What about cross-disciplinary stuff, like a computer scientist who starts working in bioinformatics? Just idly curious.

Go grab yourself a portable browser (https://www.opera-usb.com/operausben.htm) and use that instead.

And the big old IE discussion again, right? it's crazy. I hate IE.
