Why the hell is philosphy reserved only for poi?

"Poi is life"...... where the hell is staff in that equation? tongue

Poi gets all the "There is no move" BS... what do we get? Nowt.

S'not fair. I want to be able to terrify newbies with such confusing words of wisdom, but yet there doesn't seem to be any spiritual side to staff... Lame!

Is it because staffers are, by default, meat heads? Is it beacuse philosophy is reserved only for the wussier side of object manipulation?

Should I just shut the hell up before I get lynched?

This cult of comparison will cause dissatisfaction.

If you had never seen a poi being twirled (took me about a coupla months) would your opinions on staff philosophy remain so?

Far from being something that should be held in competition, I find that the philosophies in Poi and Staff (and for that matter, dance and martial arts) to compatible, with little adjustment.

There's *much* to be gained in exploring the common ground than there is in examining differences.

really? I picked up staff *much* quicker than poi - and you smack yourself in the crackers less frequently with the staff - but hitting yourself in the head hurts more with staff...
I guess my knackers are more valuable to me than my head/brain...

Staffers get distracted and start talking about what steves are?
(search for a vid in this very forum called "Drew and Staff", it's labelled in the vid as 'Steve's move', funnily enough...)

Do staff threads go offtopic more than poi threads?

Is this a sign of staffer's greater ability at lateral thinking than the constricted and narrow minded poi spinners?

Is this also the cause of our planes generally being shitter too?

All these and more will be answered by God during a small Q&A session in the tea room at 11:45.
Please don't use milk that has been labelled with other people's names UNLESS YOU ASK FIRST, thank you.

hmmm... I think a lot of the philosophy stuff comes from people talking about spinning at an advanced stage of the evening when they are under the influence of one or more recreational drugs, cos its kind of interesting to see what people can come up with, and its kind of fun.

And being philosophy, you can say anything you want about it. It's just fun to look for wider patterns in things.

Plus you can philosophise while in a very small space, whereas it is much more difficult to spin iin this condition.

sooo.... philosophy of things is an excuse to talk about spinning on a level which everyone can participate in, rather than talking about technical stuff which just confuses everyone.

Getting to the point, here's my little piece of staff philosophy:

The staff is rigid, and therefore represents that in your life which is unchangable. Learning to manipulate the staff represents the way in which we deal with our current situation.

Just as some situations seem great and then come to bite you on the arse, some of the greatest staff moves often lead to *bonk*

Thus a staff spin is a reflection of our ability to deal with life and to apply skills we have learnt in the past to avoid getting twatted in the head today.

The problem is...

Poi are much harder to use than staffs.
They have a life of their own and will happily swing by themselves.

Now thats a load of bollox. Failing with a poi may be more potentonaly faital but staff is not easier in any way. But most staffers never get beond just twearling the staff over your head or ether side of you in diffrent ways. Take using 2 staffs vs 2 poi for instans. where two staffs has 4 points of Flames to keep in mind while poi only has 2. Try to do a 360 rotation throw in front of you both two staffs, and now try the same thing with 2 pois. Whats easy and not depends purly on how far your willing to take it. How hard somthing is compeard to somthing else has only to do with what lvl you want to take it to.

Philosophy is important to. Staffers just tend to be a bit more secure in there ways and dont need to spend houers at end talking about it instedd of enjoing the art. ubbloco

Posted:If you were to compare poi to staff, it would be more sensible to say single staff vs a pair of poi, and double staff to quadruple poi.

Planes for both comparisons are pretty much the same wink

I disagree with you on saying poi is harder than staff. I've been ding poi and staff for roughly the same period of time, and staff has come to me a lot quicker than with poi. Poi requires an almost 6th sense to help you guide were you want the poi to go. Staff is far more obediant, and the points follow each other.

Posted:The staff is harder than poi debate has been around forever guys... its all about what different people are good at.

*Personally* I do find poi easier, altho less interesting as
1) They stay in my hands unless I am talking on the phone at the same time
2) They generally stay going about where I sent them within reason, wheras the staff has a tendancy to do part of a move I told it to and then wander off over some other part of my body/ the landing/ some poor person nearby/ etc

-which if you'll notice is the almost exact opposite of what frd said....

Personally I like megs second suggestion. Well, maybe I shouldn't say like, as I prefer the days when i fearlessly attempted to do some things with double three-sections, but I guess we all grow older sometimes... I should say I follow that one a lot. Especially as my staffs hurt more than just about anyone else's I've played with....

But as far as I can see, the main philosophy seems to be: don't hit yourself

a much more down to earth philosophy than those in the poi move forums, but surely more of an instruction than a philosophy?
