I spin poi and own a yellow 1973 VeeDub Squareback. It's name is Mustard seed. Cuz it kinda looks like one. I am planning on painting it to give it a new look, but am waiting till I get all the mechanicals fixed up before worrying about the looks. I have driven it from Arizona to Washington twice and then friom AZ to Eugene OR. So It isn't doing too bad. Keep on Dubbing my friend.

The old Vee Dubs are great on consumtion. It all depends though on your tuning ablity (or your mechanic's). My old mechanic got a fully loaded VW bus to get 35 mile a gallon. That is good for a bus that was weighed down with heavy VW parts. My Squareback got from AZ to Washington a couple yrs ago for $80. That was great. I was fully loaded also. The plan for VW (by Hitler) was a fuel efecient, easy to work on, on and off road, peoples car. It is!!! I used to amaze people with the off road ability of my squareback. There is a reason for the full underbody skid plate, independent drives, and independent suspention. These cars/ buses were ment to be able to handle the rough roads of farming life. Finding an old VW and fixing it up is a great way to recycle and have a good vehicle. The parts are still out there, and if you maintain your VW well it will never break down on you. The reason people think the break all the time is all the abused mistreated VW's. If you don't take care of it of course it will break. The other good part is that parts are relitively cheap. And you caqn do most of the work your self if you want.

Can you tell I like the Vee Dubs? Another good thing is you get built in road care. If you do bust down at some point another VW owner (or someone who used to) will drive along and stop for you. It isn't like AAA, or other stuff, but it is amazing who will stop for a broken VW. It could be the hippie couple or the rich yuppie. It might be the old farmer or a bunch of city punk rockers. You never know who has or had a VW, but they will stop to help you. When they see you driving they wave. Vee Dubs have a feeling of belonging to a club. So enjoy your VW if you got one, if you don't then maybe you will notice them a little more now.

I have to get my licence and a new engine first... besides, Ive heard they dont go very fast without destroying the engine... is this true guys?

Hey Hanz they can go very fast depends on what engine you have. i've seen a 67 bug go down the quater mile strip in 9 seconds doing 139MPH and there was a bus doing 120MPH so again it depends on what engine also how much money you have to do!!!! but that's the best thing about Vee Dubs you don't have to do anything to them as they are still cool without the mods and people will still look when you drive past!!
Me and my other half have a split screen safari bus and all we have done is have it lowered and it's about an inch of the ground and it is rat look!! People always look at it when we go past even kids have a smile on their faces!! it's wicked it's the best feel driving or being a passenger, going for a crise in the sunshine with the music blaring out and everyone looking at you when you go past it's the best it maks you have the happy feeling even when your down! Don't forget a slowwer VW means less speeding tickets. I have never hed problems with speeding on the freeway cuz I can't. But it is true you can beef up your VW by putting different engines into it. Most popular (cuz it matches up easy cuz he made VW too) is a porche engine. Now you can get other types but theyt require lot more modification. But are you really in a hurry to get there. Going fast almost always means burning more fuel. With prices rising you might want that slower burning VW.

Yeah, theres no need to go fast in cars, speeding = crashing, and you cant do that in a bug. I shudder to think what a bug looks like after a crash, especialy with these ass woles who drive around britain with there rediculouse 4x4's wich they use to take the kids to shcool in hogging all the roads.

Just buy a four seater for god sakes, you dont need all these armored 4x4's with bull bars! soapbox
