i HATE the one where if you go outside from a warm house into the cold you will get a cold. because ive had "old wives" complain about me leaving the house. I mean, its not as if i can stay indoors all day just cos the temperature difference will kill me! cos then they'd say

"if you watch too much tv your eyes will turn square"

If that was true we'd have no bald people but they'd all have crazy hair. (think 'something about mary')

When Dr. Ruth came to Stanford she brought up this theory.

Then she looked at us and said "And I'm very proud of you because when I said this to a group of Harvard students last week they all looked at their palms and you didn't." biggrin ubblol

Added to what vampyricAcid said. the beta-carotene(sp) that IS in carrots is used to synthesize retinol which is used in the part of th eye (rods) that sees black and white and in low light levels

I agree, many are simplified ways for people in the past to pss on knowledge without complication, they found something worked and stuck with it. It's only today with our complicated science stuff we know WHY it works... smile

It has worked for me loads of times but maybe thats just the placebo effect... dunno.

Rub warts with bacon and then bury the bacon at the end of the garden on a full moon.

Walking under laders is bad luck. No it's just common sense unless you want you hair painted.

Posted:i saw a cartoon once when i was little where someone walked under a ladder and put their foot in a tin of paint. and for years i thought that was why you werent supposed to walk under ladders.

but then again, "is that a rabbit in your pocket are are you just glad to see me" from 'who framed rodger rabbit' was the first variation of that i ever heard. therefore, when i heard :"is that a gun in your pocket..." i thought it was a take-off of 'rodger rabbit'

Posted:What you acctually find with old wives tales, is that they do acctually contain a whole host of information, be it herbal remedy, common sense, or any other subject. Some of these old wives tales date back thousands of years too. Same goes for nursery rhymes. They form a massive storehouse of 'forgotten wisdom'. That doesn't stop some of them being wrong, after all, no-ones perfect.

there's a rather intresting site here that has info on a few different old wives tales, and folklore to predict the weather. And cows lying down before it rains..... its not to keep them dry, but the grass they're lying on (that's why they're always huddled together in a circle)... and they do it so they don't have to lay down in the wet mud wink
