This is a personal preference poll. What’s you favorite wick design and why?

Cathedrals are my favorite wick design because of the flame intensity you get with them. I’m making a 4” by 7” set right now that should throw a pretty big flame. I like big heavy heads you can slow down and that burn so big you have people saying HOLY [censored] before you start spinning.devil
I’ve never burned with monkey fist wicks or hybrids before. And I don’t like the exposed metal on most tube core wicks. And even though rolled wicks are what I learned with and are also great if you like spinning fast. Since I started to use cathedrals I find them to be too light.

i like tubecore the most:
* tube core now comes with little metal: stitched tube cores
* if the attraction to cathedrals is weight, why not add intermediate poi heads to your poi?
* My fuel container just fits the diameter of tube core poi heads. I love that I don't need a separate dipping container to transport/empty/clean.
* It's what better people use smile

This may be a silly question but what are intermediate heads? I do like the weight of my cathedrals, but the big flame is what I really like. I haven’t tried a few types of wick heads yet but I figured more surface area = more flame. I toyed with the idea of a Hybrid with a cathedral core. But I haven’t tried it yet.

(why do i always seem to be trailing you in posts, Tink L.?)

Erm, for my first set, i've already ordered monkey fists, just to save money later on really so i don't have to 'upgrade' from more beginner-y ones. People tend to start off on cylinder i think, because the flames don't get as huge? (correct me if i'm wrong please)

Tube cores. Most people start with them.

I'm currently using cathedrals (a nice big set I built) which give scary flames and look fantastic for btb and wp stuff. Not that I like to show off at all... ubbangel

I've never used intermediate wicks but am thinking about getting a couple of sets for my backup poi. Is there anything I should look out for?

Ive always been a fan of Cathedrals but of late have been using the
4" stitched roll poi heads.

https://www.homeofpoi.com/shop/productDetails.php/249_45_stitched

They dont have a Tubcore centre just a thin eyebolt meaning no aluminium just wick and no metal other than the stainless steel eyebolt, with no screws also...
So the weight is kept down (personal preference) Having the least amount of metal out of all the poi heads we have on the site that are not wire or monkeyfists makes them one of my favs at present....While still giving long burn times and large flames...

Poi - Monkey fists... haven't got them yet, but they are needed for Andy-style hand wraps... have to stop burning myself. Concertina wicks have too much metal. Yeow. rolleyes smile

Ropes - Drew-style ropes with big knot on the end.

Staff - Strugz's biggrin ubblove

Flags (ok, not quite fiery) - Lisa's ubblove ubblove Splendid weight, pretty colours, good for planes...

Monkey fists: I'm going to try to make my next set myself so I can get a slightly increased burn time..

I think I like the way they look like martial arts equipment even when not lit. And when they finally break, you have a fire juggling ball!

Staff: PLAY staffs/Strugz's: just cos they look soooo cool: got to love that wicking! cool

How big is the flame.
Is it as big as the monky.
Cause i have the monky . but thay got some lbs .
and it gets hard to do tricks with them .
i am looking for some that is not as heavy.

in general for POI:

****my beloved one and only monkey fists****

I prefer the shape of the flame when i play with monkey fists and they give me the weight i want and need to play as slowly as i want and as my loverly teacher has shown me wink

for my candles:

just kevlar as close to the palm as possible, on a piece of metal for sure, not lying in my hand

for my staff/doubles:

for my long single staff, just loads of kevlar to each end,

for my sweet doubles (111cm) 5cm kevlar appr. 70-90cm on each side

But at the moment, apart from throwing my staffs and sexy candle dancing, i prefer my POI with my soooooo much beloved second pair of *MONKEY Fists* thx Andy-honey

@Dster: its not hard to do moves with monkey fists.....
i mean it always depends on your opinion on what nice and good or wonderful means, but its not hard to do moves.......cause if you take a long chain you can even controll your poi and moves much better as you can play even more slow than with short chains and the weight is especially good for that!
otherwise if you dont have the weight its much harder to controll the poi and your play....at least thats my opinion! i can play more graceful, like nick thinks of my play, with the weight of the monkey fists!

so what exactly do you reckon is hard on doing moves with monkey fists???
