E RERE TAKU POI

E rere taku poi
Mauria atu ra
Nga riri o te motu
E papaki mai nei
Ko toku aroha
Me kawe ki te tau
Kia atu kia hoki mai
Kia atu ki hoki mai

( Fly my poi
Carried over
The hostile island
The beating of
My love
Carry to my beloved
With a message to return
With a message to return )

Mäori song for everybody who love Poi as much as me .....

A native Hawai'ian friend of mine told me that Polynesian poetry tends to be very suggestive and erotic. Basically, to catch the meaning, she says that you have to "listen with the sickest mind you can."

Hence, "beating of my love" should be taken quite...sickly.

Beautiful stuff.

I'm sending a set of poi to my partner in Italy this month, and I think I'll be sending that along with them. Perfect.

Where did the song come from?

p.s. what does the thread title mean, Kapura Wera?

Richee, thank you!

i hadn't even begun looking in earnest, but very much wanted to find sites like this one, to fill out the maori tradition behind poi and to connect it to the beautiful old lore. know that i greatly appreciate this reference, will absorb what i find there, and will put it to good active use broadening the connections and heritage-sense of fire artists wherever i can.

and KÄPURA WERA's meaning, wow, that's a twist on the name i was given as storyteller, as apprentice to Brother Blue (Dr. Hugh Morgan Hill), official storyteller of Boston!
