It doesn't work so well with paraffin\kerosene or lamp oil, you really need white gas or an alcohol to leave a trail. The most common burnoff is done by dragging the poi along the ground in a wide circle around you. Be careful though, if you use too much fuel or burnoff over combustible material (leaves), you will end up in an inferno.

Some people like to spin the poi fast at their sides to leave long tracks on the ground but this tends to throw fuel all over the place and often on other people so I wouldn't recommend it.

I consider burnoffs more of a novelty and usually stick to spinoff bags or cans.

I saw Durbs doing some different one's the other night... They looked like he was swinging the poi slowly, and then jerking them back to get a small fireball...

Don't take my word on that, though... Try someone who knows for sure...

I tend to use that method too, Ed.

The poi flick away from you and give a small fireball.

I do that whip-esque burnoff occasionally.

But tis not good for the chains (especially not ballchain), so not often.

Tis ok, I don't have ballchain either... I have links (dogleads that you buy in a petshop - they're much better, soldered, so they don't break).

You could use wire for burnoffs too, I expect shrug

However, I'd highly recommend that you change your wire to chains. It's personal preference, but I find cable gets twisted and is not as durable as link chain.

speaking of wraps, you can get mini burnoff type effect if you do a fast and hard wrap, but not with the wires please.

There are two other burn offs with poi Ive done.

First one is done by spinning at your sides and then hitting the side of your poi head on the bottom of your shoe so that the head swivels really fast. You can only do one at a time using this method. You could however, do the same thing with your pants instead of your shoe to get both at the same time, but this is much more dangerous since youre contacting a fully loaded wick with fabric - Kero/Lamp Oil only.

The other works off the same principle but is done in a butterfly and you intentionally let the heads swipe each other when they intersect. I find this is easiest to do with a 1-h butterfly since mine usually swipe each other anyway smile

ooh they sound pretty icon-
I've not played with burnoffs at all, but I have heard that the ones you're described work best with cathedral wicks- is that what you use?

Ive done it with cathedrals but I think all wicks will work almost the same.

confused I find that burnoffs work fine with paraffin.

If you do it well enough theres a trail left but it all depends on the surface you're burning off on.

I run the poi along the ground in a circle around me, as mentioned before. If you get the timing and speed right then it looks very very pretty smile
But then again everybody does it..so dosn't look quite so wonderous and pretty to a non-spinner

Heh

After useing BBQ lighter fluid for a very long time, I can tell you that parrafin is much better, by a considerably amount.

As for smell, BBQ reeks eugh man is it nasty.

I thiunk BBQ has a higher burn temp, so It is probably worse for your wicks. Im not sure, so dont take my word for it.

Qnd burn time with BBQ is miserable. you get bout a minute and a half tops of burn time.

Stick with parrafin smile

I second that. Charcoal Lighter Fluid isnt a good spinning fuel. Bad burn time, crappy flame size, hotter than lamp oil, and smells worse. Its slightly cleaner burning but not nearly enough to counter the negatives. Leader of my fire troupe swears by it though, ugh.

with double headed poi, i spins thems lasso style below each hand, each poi's heads spins around each other, creating a bigger flame. they're not the same size (2" + 4" heads each poi) but the effect is still consistent. nice way to start a routine, very bright, slow start.
