I think there are probably safer methods for these tricks nowadays (nearly 60 years on...)

I wouldn't reccomend trying any of those...

I like the "take lead in the mouth" trick - exactly how many toxic substances can we fool around with in a most dangerous manner at once? I like how he says you can add quicksilver (mercury) to the mix to bring down its melting point!

i wonder how long the author lived...

lol well back then they where stupid, they didnt realise that everyone who tried insane stuff like this had there teeth, hair and fingernails falling out because of the murcury and lead poisoning, not to mention the other side affect of dyeing

the method for the 'blazing sponge trick' is superb:

1. douse sponges in petrol.
2. light them on fire.
3. put them in your mouth.

You could also put in a little potassium for nicer effects, then your mouth won't just burn but there would be a nice little explosion with reddish flames. Just an idea.
