How often to do upgrade or add size or weight to your poi?
I've done it several times over the past couple of years, and am fighting doing it again. I like the control I feel with heavier items but then in working with them, I become accustomed to the weight and need to add more.
If I am not careful I will soon be spinning basketball sizes heads. lol

How often do you upgrade?

I practice with poi which are lighter than my fire setup. I find this keeps me centered as I dont get so used to the weight of my fire poi that I need bigger ones. So far, I have yet to "upgrade" in terms of weight.

I've been adding weight, changing design, swapping ropes/chains for several times... the half a year i've been poi'ing i've changed it at least 25 times smile
I'm one of those guys that needs perfect weight... then again, i have like 3 pair sock-poi, 3 pair of ledpoi, 2 pair of firepoi, 2 staffs, devilsticks, etc. all collected in the past half year. I got for each occassion a different poi... i like it that way biggrin

I've never thought of it as upgrading, but I went from 1 to 2 to 3 wicks per hand.. and am back down to 2 now. 3 looked cool, but it was so heavy, it was unmanageable frown

I mostly use socks and my HyperLights now (which are roughly 180g each).

i spin with very light socks been tempted to go a bit heavier just to make moveing to fire easier as the weight change can be a bit annoying

thinking of making another set of more heavily weighted poi for throws and such hmm....

I used to spin with tailed tennisballs, then light juggling balls in VERY short socks, now I use 250g juggling balls in socks. Fire poi wise, I have always used monkey fist, but with medium, short then long chains as I changed practise poi..

My poi have slowly climbed to 250g each, I am looking to upgrade them slightly, but am unsure what to put in them. My original ones were tennis balls filled with rice, with a bolt or two to get the weight up. Unsurprisingly, they hurt like hell when they hit because of the bolts. What else can you put in them that will make them heavier yet not break bones?

What weight are most of you spinning with at the moment out of interest?

Don't worry, be happy...

Pele, I have reached Basketballs, and I still keep upgrading. smile Once I become comfortable with the weight I add more. It really helps with Isolations too. smile

The basketballs are for show but I'm upgrading my standard set to 8' of 4" wicking per head. :P

I found I got heavier and heavier the more I practices, but have definately plateaued (sp?) now at around 180 in the head and 66 in the handles.

I don't really understand this urge to increase weight all the time unless you can clearly see a benifit, or of course unless your arms are swelling so much with muscle you need a car wheel to give them a workout ubblol

Let's relight this forum ubblove

i changed what type of poi i practice with over the years and the weight in the heads has varied over that time.

as for fire poi, i've only ever bought my first set and the rest were given to me so i don't really choose the size of my firepoi heads!

i have previously had up to 250g in the heads of my practice poi.
but then i have used glosticks on string that felt like about 30g.
i have no idea how heavy any of my firepoi weigh (dipped or not) shrug

practice poi are now 160g underfilled juggling balls on strings.

nighttime poi are 190g globalls on strings (with the same as handles for when i'm feeling special).

my shoulders don't seem to like much more weight than that anyway.

i think upgrade is the wrong word here.

refine would be better.

i've refined the weight in my poi a hundred times. biggrin

i think i've found happiness with about 110g.

I upgraded in the first couple of years, then downgraded. For me the emphesis was bigger is better, now i've gotten that out my system I've settled with a size I find the most enjoyable. smile

Mine are kind of "Trigger" poi

I still think of them as my original, first set of fire poi I ever bought.
However, I've changed the cable for ball change, different handles and added more wick.

Am happy with them now though - they're not huge, but strangely seem to burn for a very long time biggrin

And that's what I've done. Maintained it for 20 years. This old broom's had 17 new heads and 14 new handles in its time.

I went from tennis balls on string up to tennis balls filled with metal nuts and bolts, then I dropped down to cone poi with a homemade juggling ball inside (about 100-110grams).
After spinning them for a while, I came to the conclusion that the increased drag from spinning cone poi compared to strings counts for a hell of a lot, and means that I don't need heavy weights in them to make them feel comfortable.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.
