So I figured if FireMike could do it with teeth, I could do it with tattoos!

So, how many do you have, where are they, what are they, what made you decide to get them and what's the significance?

3 so far :

-- Tigger holding a shamrock on my right shoulder. I drew it myself. I got it in October of '95 to mark graduating from high school (I needed to wait until I moved to college in order to avoid the wrath of my dad).

-- Ivy around my right ankle. The vines circle around both sides of my ankle bones, form a heart in the front that goes down the front of my foot, with a forget-me-knot just above my Achilles tendon. Another one that I drew myself. This one was to celebrate leaving a bad relationship in '97.

-- Swallowtail butterfly on the small of my back. My only "flash" tat, I got it mostly because I wanted another one, and my husband wanted one during one of our pre-marriage visits to each other (we were in a long-distance relationship at the time). I've got plans to add more to it, but I don't have the money right now (probably because we blew $100 at the piercing shop the other day).

Nice one Nyx, who doesn't love discussing their tats?

Since I posted in the other tat thread, I've had 13 hours on my sleeve, and have 2 more hours to go til it's finished - I'm so excited. Oh, and Pele, don't make me think about how much it has cost.....

The first I got was when I turned 18 and it is a tribal half sun/half moon on my belly.
The second one is a tribal dragon on my left arm and I got that one when I was 20 and to that I added a Giger landscape which is a half sleeve and I got that when I was 21.
On my cleavage and above my belly button I have maya hieroglyphs that symbolizing by ancestry which I got when I was 21 and are my 4th and 5th.
On my right arm I have more tribal art which I draw myself and I got when I was 22.
And my most special one is an angel going to heaven on my calf which I got after the death of my mom when I was 22.
And I still want more....

Oh, so many self-designed here, it's fantastic!

Nyx! e-mail me the pic, we'll OrangeFire host it, with a url to post it here, just like the pic i'm posting below.

Trin, scars only count if like we discussed i get to carve them 3D into you, or recarve the scrapes ya got off the road motorbikin, like they do in Central Africa.

Pele, Girl from Mars, chickygrrl & Tika got their own dezines inked, Cage, Bram (do it big, Claymore dude, do it!), TheBovril Monkey (nice patterns!), Lunch Box?, Pele all have new customs planned (Kurobei & i'd better get crackin sometime!), & a lot a you got dezines picked. . .

ok, Ray, a triskele for ya, in exactly the colors and shape i painted it on my staff stand's top surface (there's a copper tube in the center in which the staff-foot sits). and dammit, 1/3 of those 1,000 words coz there's both a divine fire story for everyone, and a US gov story which ya love:

Non-Https Image Link

only 4kb!

DA TRISKELE

George Broderick of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin sez "Manannán Mac Lir [FireMike: the "titanic" Sea God who produced the Isle of Man] . , . protector of its people, . . roll[s] down from the mountain top against Man’s enemies in the form of a fiery three-legs as part of his protective mechanism. . ."

Isle of Man's government sez 'Why the Three Legs were adopted as the royal arms of the Manx kingdom is unknown. . . a symbol of the Sun, the seat of Power and Life. . . All the early examples of the Manx "Legs" show them as if running sunwise (i.e. clockwise). . , the ancient pagan sun-symbol. . . In ancient times the emblem [represented the triangle-shaped] island of Sicily. . . but the Sicilian "Legs" were always naked and generally displayed Medusa's head at the central point.

. . .[A]mongst the Celts and Norsemen . . . [was a] simplified "Three Legs" emblem, on coins of the tenth century Norse King, Anlaf Cuaran, whose dominion included Dublin and the Isle of Man; and it is probable that the later Manx Kings were a branch of the same dynasty. [FireMike: so Scandinavians ruled Isle of Man 9th C CE - 1266 CE]. . . THE THREE LEGS device. . . [was] adopted in the Thirteenth Century [by] the native kings of the Isle of Man, whose dominion also included the Hebrides - the Western Isles of Scotland. . . After 1266, when the native dynasty ended and control of the Island passed briefly to the Crown of Scotland and then permanently to the English Crown, the emblem was retained, and among the earliest surviving representations are those of the Manx Sword of State, thought to have been made in the year 1300 AD.'

The US Government uses it too! Heraldica sez, 'The symbol also appears in the seal of the United States Department of Transportation (49 CFR 3.1): "The official seal of the Department of Transportation is described as follows: A white abstract triskelion figure signifying motion appears within a circular blue field. The figure is symmetrical. The three branches of the figure curve outward in a counter-clockwise direction, each tapering almost to a point at the edge of the field."'

So! the US Treasury reversed the sunwise direction of the 3 legs, just like Hitler reversed the direction of the 4 arms of the ancient Hindu symbol for life to make his swastika. ooooh, scary. . . (glad it's just Halloween blowing towards us). . .go burn up some currency on the Day of the Dead, since ya got your own death prepared on your shoulder, and see wot happenz, Ray, specially in Japan where ghosts haunt all the time, and they all lost their legs since the 18th C CE, mebbe they'll want yours. . .

Ray - cantus hasn't been being lazy - He's been kept busy

I love the look of tattoos but methinks I'd get bored with the same thing on me all the time. I like Cantus's (cos they're fantastic) and I like the ones of Spiral and PK that I've seen. And Dibs' and Cass' ones are beautiful, but I don't think I'm gonna get one any time soon.

Kanji of "jade" on my ribs on the left front. Plain black. One of the few that is Chinese and Japanese both. Made the decision on impulse, but waited several weeks to aquire. That symbol constituted a commitment to living a spiritual life, it was not fully my name yet.

Yangyin between my shoulderblades. Black and skintone (i'm pretty pale when i get no sun). I know lots of people have them, but that's not my problem. I have loved the yangyin since i first saw one when i was, what, 3 years old? No one ever had to explain it to me, the meaning was uuterly self-evident from the first time i saw one. This is also the symbol that showed me what a symbol is: a single image that represents an idea, sometimes a complex mutli-layered idea.

Celtic-style interlacing inside my left wrist. Black outline with 2tone dark/light green filling. It got to where it bothered me that i'd have to put something on to have interlacing on me so got one tatt'ed. Auditioned several designs, finally picked a nice little number from a George Bain book (Geo. Bain is kinda the Grandmaster of modern interlacing). After i got it, i found out that this design is also the Buddhist Knot Of Life. SCORE!

In future:
A small little ivy vine growing out of my hairline on the back of my neck, just to the right of my spine. I'd like to have it with a subtle drop shadow. This is for sure the next one i get.

An animal-marking type design on the back of my left calf. The design is a combo of the markings on my cat's shoulders and the facial markings of a tiger. It will be rendered in as many shades as possible of human skintones: i am white, i am black, i am red, i am yellow, i am brown, i am human, i am animal.

Something on the outside of my right calf. If i havbe the design for this by the time i'm forty, i'll count myself lucky, i've been trying for ten years to pin it down.

The fox from The Little Prince. Don't know yet where he'll go, but he is all about making connections, which is what i am all about. Almost got that one last year in Edmonton, but the only really good shop was booked up 5 weeks ahead.

Also have a Laguna design in mind. Wanted to get it when in Laguna last December for my brother's wedding, but the artist available didn't even know what a eucalyptus leaf looks like. After TEN years in Laguna! Nobody who's that unobservant is setting needle to MY skin, thank you! Besides, he wanted $125 for a $75 tat... I'll prob have it done here in Denver, by Julian.

Anyone thinking of getting a tattoo, PLEASE feel free to pm me for my tattoo-getting info sheet. Yep, i actually keep one on file in MS Word...

We got the MikeZ in the house, woot!Glue the ham, hat baby!
