So today was my first shift in the ER.

Today I:

•Wrote and signed a prescription for the first time.
•Wrote and signed orders for the first time.
•Wrote and signed notes for the first time.
•Started two IV's.
•Sutured up a 2-year-old boy's forehead.
•Diagnosed a case of coxsakie virus.
•Picked up a phone and said "Pediatric Emergency. This is Dr. Ginsberg."

Just lots of little things like that.

It was *GREAT!!!* I loved it! It was hot (A/C was broken), hard work, my feet and back hurt, I'm exhausted...

But I did good work, especially for my first day. And I'm looking forward going back in the morning. biggrin

Night, all. Be well! hug

Nice one, glad to hear it went well biggrin

You can practise i.v.'s on me. wink Besides i hate drinking water. tis' much easier to get hydrated that way, though i don't want to get hydrated by the other method. besides, i would'nt want to get you too excited about your work Dr.Ginsberg. wink tongue

I had a rough morning today.

I had a kid who kept going in and out of respiratory distress (asthma).

NOTHING is as terrifying as a child in respiratory distress. Kids don't die of heart failure, they die of LUNG failure.

At that point, a patient came in for her fourth follow-up for a swollen lymph node that has all of us scratching our heads (I got yelled at because I didn't know what was wrong with her, either) and right then and there one of my attendings decided that I needed to teach a med student how to remove sutures.

AAAAARGH!!!! LEAVE ME ALONE, PEOPLE!!! CAN'T YOU SEE I'M FECKING BUSY????????

*regains composure*

I still love my job. I got my first continuity patient today, that is a patient who will be my patient for the next three years. I can't say her name, but she's 13 days old. And I went right and fell head-over-heels in love with her right there.

I thought of Arsn and Valura and their little miracle and how they'll soon be tending to his every need...and fretting over the little white bumps on his nose (don't worry, guys, it's called milia and it's harmless and goes away) and how much he eats...or doesn't eat...or what color his poop is. And how he'll cuddle into the crooks of their necks and coo at them and how lucky he is to be born into a family with so much love.

And how lucky I am to be a part of this young family's journey into parenthood. And how lucky I am to be a part of their lives and to know that I'll get to see this little girl get to age 3. And maybe, in spite of my specialty in adolescent medicine, I'll hang on to her...just her...to watch her grow up.

Maybe I'll have my own kids, but until then, I can have everyone else's.

ubblove
