I have decided I am going to buy a video camera - but I am stuck on the age old question of which one . . .

I thought that the best thing would be to get some advice from the filming community on HoP....

Right this will be my first vid camera so here are my priorities: (please tell me if I have them arse about face)

Budget £300 ish
Small & light - so I don't mind taking it places.
Reliable - are there makes that are worse than others. . .
Good Quality - rather pay for what you get than get the cheapest make and it always going tits up..

Is there anything else I should be looking at...

Any past experiences anyone fancies sharing . . .

Thanks

Just had a look at that camera. its the model up from mine. its a decent portable camera (nice and small) and unlike mine its got DV in and out (ive only got out) this is dead handy for putting edited videos back on tape if you wanna copy them.
Cannon is a better make but JVC is fine.
The only thing it hasn't got is 3CCD (3 Colour Chip Display) which means it uses 1 chip to process all the coulours(red green blue) but for the price rance youve got you wont find one with 3CCD (they start around 600 notes).
all in all for filming spinning etc that one will be fine, i do a film making course at uni and have never had any problems with mine.
hope that helps

I recommend trying out any that you are considering at the store...The clerks shouldn't give you too much hassle as they want to make a sale...
I personally prefer digital high 8 over DV (or mini DV for that matter)...I just like the way the picture looks better....I have a SONY TVR350, and am very satisfied with it in pretty much every aspect...It has wi-fi and a USB port too, very convienient for uploading it to the web.

That rarely happens if you shop around properly online. I always buy on the net from huge companies that generally deal direct with business customers and 99% of the time can beat shop prices, a lot of the time beating the price the shop pays in the first place. Ebuyer for instance sell a lot of computer bits (hdds, cpu, memory etc) to end users for under a pound more per unit than leading uk importer/wholesalers of the same stuff in batches of 50 plus.

Incredible prices and they did a 24 hour swap out no hassles on the first one they sent that had a manufacturing problem (they actually have a phone number with clueful people on the other end too). Would recomend them.

Do it do it!
xl1s are seriously cool and you could keep it wraped up in a bag when your not using it.
