What are bolas? Are they a slang term for something else, or a new thing I've never heard of before?

Now this is funny since I always thought that bolas were a central American hunting weapon used for entangling your prey.

Posted:Yes, it could be the french poi rather than the hunting weapon... the person in context who mentioned it was acting like he knew everything about firetwirling, contact, etc, then as soon as i mention poi, he doesnt know what they are, and says that they might be like bolas, but spin slower...

I think Fire Mike's explanation sounds fairly interesting since we do know everything abuot everything but usually suck at actually doing anything

Posted:ROFL ... Don't ask Raph ..; out of the million French chicks around , he found himself a british Princess

french don't call the hunting weapon anything, they expect it to obbey without having to call it

As for the way French make love ... hmmm... I heard French are sensual and tender lovers, but I also heard they're arrogant selfish bitches with not a single touch of sexiness... I guess it all depends on the French chick you end up with

The dessert thing is not a rumour though ... We make fantastic pastries anddelicatessen

Sorry this is awfully off topic

Who wants a princess, when there are tavern wenches scurrying about?

In terms of French girls...well, I suppose I was just not fortunate enough to experience anything really positive in that area.
They were all really possessive!!

Did anybody see Fatal Attraction?

They are cute and I certainly wouldn't like them to wind up like the bunny in Fatal Attraction.

Posted:Bolas are what poi become after you let one slip outta your hand and flies through the air when trying to spin it as fast as you can.
The french are not specific to calling poi bolas. However, ignorance running amok, when people see a ball at the end of a chain they think "bolas" until some suave MF such as myself takes upon himself to show these ignorants mortals the errors of their ways.
France is not New-Zealand where poi seem to be as common as apples. Do not confuse ignorance with lack of information. Hell, even I didn't even know at first (No snickering at the back of the class please...).
Bolas, originally from Argentina, are three ball resembling, leather wrapped rocks weapons that one twirls over his head before sending them flying to wrap themselves around something, usually the feet of a calf. You're pretty sure to knock yourself or the designated victim out if they spin up to your head.
Poi, well... Poi are poi. Exercise apparatus for Maori warriors (dexterity, strength, speed...)and hand pacifiers used by maori mothers to soothe their kids.
There you go.

Posted:Actually, the weapon is a BolO, and by all descriptions, that is correct.

A BolA is a hard acrylic ball on the end of a long silk rope. You weild a set of these like poi except you slam the acrylic end into the ground (usually a wooden stage) to create a rhythmic pattern. This is used in conjunction with hard shoe dancing, most commonly as a counter rhythm to the spanish Flamenco dance.

There are two asian girls who do this in Cirque Du Soliel, and a few more of us globally. I will say they can be used as weapons, as they hurt badly and can break bones. I suggest only experienced spinners attempt this. I would also like to say that if you do attempt this, have several acrylic balls on hand and a *really* great drill and clamp system.
