As in, when you just pick up your poi and you just "spin" them - what do you do whilst thinking about tricks or idly spinning them?

I always resort/return to low-reels - no idea why. I practically never do 3-beat weaves anymore, if I want to "fill" space, it is always low reels, likewise when I first pick up poi, it's the first "move" i'll do and if I'm talking whilst spinning - again it's
always low reels smile

As for why - I'm think it's because it just feels really nice, keeps the planes neat (in performing), it's easy to turn with (but then so are weaves...), doesn't interfere with eye-level so I can talk over the poi and meh - I don't know. But I've been doing it for years now...

Just wondered what everyone else does - and how they think it reflects their styles...

From a cold start, I usually go straight into a split-time underhand thread-the-needle... probably a juggling influence.

Umm,

I think they call them “reels” in The Poi Spinning Book.

Alternating between the three beat weave, windmill, and reverse weave, then a bicep wrap and then dropping the poi into butterfly reels,,repeat pattern. I did an interview on national television a few weeks ago and I spun this pattern through the whole thing. The interview was on politics, and never once did the interviewer or cameraman ask me what I was doing,,,,guess they just thought they'd get an opinion from a chain swinging, tie-dye wearing weirdo,,,they ran the whole thing though.

If I'm spinning glowsticks, my base move is just spinning circles at my sides, I find after pulling off a series of wraps that I need a few circles to let me know if I'm in butterfly or weave.

"I get told off for doing hip reels too much" - who on earth by? They them they know nothing wink

If my base move isnt reels, then I think its going to be btb waistwraps. Which is odd I suppose.

mine was buzzsaw hyperloop for ages, just so i could get it down smooth...

i just do a 7 bt airwrap mostly cuz its loads less strain than waving your arms about.. it lets the poi take their own weight a bit like meteors do..

this is a well bad habit of mine since me fire poi have ball chains which always disconect when I airwarp no matter how much i tighten em frown

That sounds highly alarming! How do they disconnect and what do you do to tighten them?
