I've been doing staff and playing for a good few years now and for the last while my staff which used to be my favourtie toy in the whole universe has totally lost interest to me, I've been through this a couple of times and I've gone from uber techincal geekery to months of just playing pretty but now when I pick the staff up I feel like I've gotten to the end and just can't be arsed, not a rant or anything just wondering how many other people go thorugh the same thing? and what you've done about it, I just move on to other toys until it comes back but I think it might be dead now

Well, if you think about it, all relationships go though that at some point, no matter how deep, loving, or meaningful.

And like any relationship you have the choice to stay and work it out if you're really in love, or move on to something that you'll really be in love with.

Just like having a girlfriend, just with less drama. biggrin

morning steve,

when tis has happened to me, its been down to realy hitting a patch where i have not learned new tricks for a while....

and i have a huge toy bag (that yes im [censored] with) but i can work with some thing else instead of......

if i put in the practice time i think i would not have this poblem....

but for you i think it would by deffiniion of edu level be totaly different. maybecos you have donit for so long, and you have gotten to be an awsome staffer with your own very nique style, maybe you feel that you have come to the end of your staff....

could it be that you have just come to thetop of the game in one type of style, i knwo from watching your sexy silly euro style you are slick, smooth and probone of the best staff spinners i had had the pleasure to seem, meet and be tought by.....

would it be worth going into doubles maybe and create your euro style with doules, orgo into hard core contact

maybe a change of toys would be what you wnat

what have you seen people use, that you would want totry and play with..........

personaly i dont think your staff can be dead, i think you have come to a point whre you also have not learn or moved on hugly or a while, and you might see it as a dead toy, but there is lots leftyou can do....

you ae [censored] awsomeman, both mentaly and physically, and you will find your way....

i go through that cant be assed feeling then i watch a video of someone with a cool style spinning and i get the bug again. forget 2 stick go straight to either 3 or 4 it will rock your world its exactly like 1 stick except you have to do things correctly because theres less room for error it sends you (well it sent me anyway) back to being a total beginner and theres not many ppl doing it so everythings brand spanking new. i put a few thoughts the other day into my shadow contact dance thread on tripples stuff try the triaxis stuff its great im sure ull find some cool mutant thumb tricks smile hug

it happens to everyone i reckon.

my theory (solely based only on my own personal experience mind) is that you only get *really* good in any one particular discipline when that discipline becomes your major focus.

unless you are rob or drew wink

but for me, i know that splitting my time between disciplines isn't my ideal way of learning and spending precious practice time on a prop i do not love playing with is a fruitless activity.

fear not the fading memory, for if you reach a fairly high level in any particular discipline, you can go back and carry on from (almost) where you left off...

i think umm wink

poi was my major focus for a good year or two.

juggling gradually crept in and poi gradually became my secondary focus.

early this year, the poi bug kicked back in and i've learnt lots of new things with them balls on strings - mainly stylistic and filling in of the gaps type learning but i'm having fun doing it again and that's the point here i think?

i have absolutely no idea what rekindled this interest but i think at the very least it is in part due to what i am interested in learning - when i fell away from spinning, i didn't want to learn all the stuff i couldn't do backwards, nor was i interested in spending time learning to isolate everything i could already do (i wanted to be able to do it, i just felt i had no incentive to put in the time required to learn it).

what i do know is that after taking a break from poi, i can do everything i could before, i enjoy spinning like i used to and have the added bonus that i can juggle 3, 4 and 5 balls ubbrollsmile

so i say (specifically to you nin-jaaaaa cos i know you are interested in several other props), put the stick down for a while.

pick it up now and again to teach a move or just to have a whirl about if the mood takes you.

but plough your attention into another prop.

i'm sure you'll come back to the stick eventually.

and when you do, i think you'll see the benefit of having put it down - forcing yourself to play when you have become uninspired by a prop can only do you harm i reckon.

the skills that you gain during your trial separation will only mean you love your stick that much more when you reunite smile

I picked up my stick just now to give it a whirl and I've got the same thing I look at how I play and i can see holes but can't be arsed to fill them in learning the other side to every move and what not, I much more enjoyed just letting the stick move, so I'm going to put it down for a while

and yes it's the contact bug that's started to get me, have you seen the stevesshow video on contactjugging.org sick sick sick pryamid isolations now my new goal in life that and the ever elusive five ball mission

I agree, it happened to me with poi. For the first couple of years I did it an hour a day everyday. Towards the end I got to the point where I'd learnt everythign other people were doing and taught myself a lot of new stuff. For the past 2 I've hardly touched it, when I do it's generally because I'm socialising with people I've met through it. I do still kind of enjoy it, and I've forgotten very little, but I don't have the same drive and passion I used to. Of course there's more to learn now, and stuff I figured out is commmon place, but that's life, i enjoyed it at the time and that's the main thing smile

I get that way. I have a box full of toys that I cycle through. Some I love more than others. Some I didn't love and now find I do.
I find I can not do what Coleman said and focus solely on one thing. I get bored or frustrated too quickly. If I get bored or frustrated then the problem comes in that I screw up. Over time I have realized that I do best with a couple props, some learning help (books, vids, peeps) and no more than 30 min. consecutively on any one toy. This means I can do 30 poi, 30 devil stick, 30 staff then back to poi.

Also I have noticed if I put a tool down for a span of time and don't practice it, when I do pick it back up I have much more enjoyment from it *and* I do better at it than before. I am able to figure out moves I could not before.

However, I also admit that I am far more stylistic than technical and so that is more fun for me to practice as such, but I still get disenchanted and move on to the next. But it always comes back around in time.

There's probably something pretty basic about using different parts of the brain. Some folks who are obsessive about things get fixated on one emotion or sensation. As for me, I'm happiest when I'm using different parts of my brain through out the week.

I can usually tell what kind of week I've had by what I want to do on the weekend. If I've had a stressful week, I want to sit in the corner and geek out by painting little men like these:

Or, if I've had a boring week, I'll want to hang out in a field of hippies and teach folks the weave...

*Dang it, the image won't post here*...

So I suspect that your toy disenchangment is due to a lack of balance of other areas of your life. Embrase the other things and the pendulum will swing back to your old toys soon enough.
