Calling all comic and film buffs.

Sin City has got to be one of the best films I've ever seen (and I've seen quite a few).

It's about sex, violence, revenge, kept promises and yet more violence and is filmed in black and white with blood, dresses and lipstick in red or yellow. It creates the illusion of a moving comic combined with the (monolougued) old private dick films of the early 60's.

Similar to Pulp Fiction in it's formula, the story follows multiple stories with the lead character being the actual City itself. Although the stories (3 major stories) are only related via the City, there are a couple of cross-overs during the one night but no interaction or consequences between characters.

It's brilliantly filmed and directed and the casting is spot on (Jessica Alba and Brittany Murphy phwoar *drool*) and this film knocks spots of anything this year.

The ending leaves you satisfied yet yearning for more, but my words can't do it justice, go see it for yourself.

Rating

9/10 nuggits

Most memorable lines from said film

MARV

smile "I love hitmen. No matter what you do to them, you don't feel bad."

smile Marv: "I had a fight with some cops."
Lucille: "Didn't kill and of them did you?"
Marv: "Not that I know of, but they know they been in a fight, that's for damn sure."

HARTIGAN

smile "There's wrong and there's WRONG. And then there's this."

smile "When it comes to consoling 19-year-old girls, I'm about as expert as a palsy patient performing brain surgery with a pipe wrench."

smile "And after I pull off that miracle, maybe I'll go punch out God."

DWIGHT

smile "I'm Shellie's new boyfriend and I'm out of my mind. If you so much as talk to her or even think her name, I'll cut you in ways that'll make you useless to a woman."

smile [hand grenade lands at his feet] "And everything seemed to be going so well."

smile "It's time to prove to your friends that you're worth a damn. Sometimes that means dying, sometimes it means killing a whole lot of people.

smile "Little Miho, you're an angel, you're a saint, you're Mother Teresa, you're Elvis. You're God. And if you'd gotten here about ten minutes sooner, we'd still have Jackie-Boy's head."

smile "She doesn't quite chop his head off, she makes a pez dispenser out of him."

THE SALESMAN

smile "The wind rises electric. She's soft and warm and almost weightless. Her perfume is sweet promise that brings tears to my eyes. I tell her that everything will be all right; that I'll save her from whatever she's scared and take her far far away. I tell her that I love her."
[silenced gunshot]
"The silencer makes a whisper of the gunshot. I hold her close until she's gone. I'll never know what she was running from. I'll cash her check in the morning."

I think it's a fantastic film, the best one I've seen in ages.

It's refreshing to see a comic book film actually made from the comic, rather than the studios rewriting it to make it crappy, which seems to be the norm at the moment.

Absolutely bloody brilliant!

Coolest, sharpest, the dialogue is amazing, and the stories don't have happy endings. Great!

Two thumbs fresh!

Actually, I didn't like it. I thought it was all a bit too much and not done 'right'. Can't be clearer than that I'm afraid, it's late.

im gunna go with the trend - i loved the film pretty original in how it was filmed and nice to see a well done crossover from comic to film

gotta say though that marvs best line is
"nice jacket - shame to get blood on it"

from watching that i wanna see them do the same thing with the sandman comics and watchmen smile

I agree, the punisher is a good one. I recommend starting with Garth Ennis' Welcome Back Frank, which is generally fantastic, although a trifle comical at some points. not a bad thing for most comic book type things, but I don't think it works too well in a story about man who kills people all the time.

For Batman (my personal favourite), I'd go for Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns, quite possibly the best comic I've ever read smile

There's Alan Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen too, although a couple of them have superpowers. Ignore the film if you've seen it, it's the same in name only and far, far better.

Oh sorry guys, and I know this is offtopic

I dont think I was too clear... There was a specific graphic novel, featuring most of the Marvel characters as if they had never had powers, and it was pretty much set in the "real" world... i.e. Peter Parker is just a geek, he gets bitten by a spider, sho 'nuff, but it only makes him ill...

ooh sin city was the sex.
it made me want to buy hotpants and tote a big gun.
i was impressed with the film in general, but for some reason the bullet wounds did it for me - fleshy explosions, rather than a neat little hole with some blood. yum.

I loved it, but it damn near traumatized my girlfriend. Seriously, she was in a state of shock for hours - sign of a good film smile

Best bits for me: Marv in general, and the first taste of Old Town justice from Miho.
