This is a quite unbelievable story- a guy and a girl (20 and 17 respectively) made mock light sabres out of flourescent tubes filled with petrol. With cameras rolling the promptly LIT the tubes, resulting in an explosion and the pair of them being severely injured (both reported to be in a critical condition). HOW do people not realise how dangerous this stuff is?

My first reaction was fairly Hicksian:

Oh good, two less f*ckwits in the world.

Though maybe there should be more "Don't f*ck with petrol" warnings about the place.

As I mentioned to Mr Chutney just now, I reckon some people need to have 'I have less common sense than the average muppet' branded onto their faces. At least then we'd know who to steer clear of.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

To try to see things from the other side, how many people outside the fire scene realise just how bad petrol can be for you?

Definitely Darwin Awards material.

Actually, the thing that really cracked me up was the picture of Anakin and Obi-Wan next to the headline: 'Two injured in mock light sabre duel'... Sounds like a story about the end of Ep 3, in which case the word 'injured' is slightly euphemistic.

Well, no, it's not Darwin awards material. They're still alive. If one or both of them die, somebody post a link to the article (I'm not likely to stumble upon it myself, it having happened across the pond), I intend to submit it to the Darwins.

My favourite Darwin Award is as follows:

3/2/90 UNCONFIRMED by Darwin

A man tries to rob a store, there are several problems with this.

1. It was a gun store.
2. It was in Washington, a state where many people are licensed to carry concealed firearms.
3. To enter the shop, he had to step around a marked police car.
4. An officer was standing next to the counter, having coffee before going on duty.

He walked in, fired a few shots into the air and demanded money. Rather predictably he got cut down where he stood. No-one else was hurt.

After much consideration, I find that the view is worth the asphyxiation.
