Interesting - by the way - the Earthquake data isn't presented as well as it should be. The Richter scale is a logarithmic scale so the Earthquake in Messina, Italy (6.9) is actually 10 times smaller than the one in Tokyo, Japan (7.9) and the Southeast Asia one of last year measured at 9.5 is a staggering 100 times bigger than the one in Tangshan, China (7.5)

Hey, if everyone gets broadband, won't it be like we're all on dialup again?

lol, no, as far as i know australia is part of the western world.

Todya on the news here they were talking about cutting woodfire emissions into the ozone and i though about the carbon dioxide emmissions list from here. ifs funny how we convince ourselves that we're fixing the problem when we all know cars are one hundred times worse for the o-zone than wood heaters...........if we really cared we'd stop or minimalise cars wouldn't we?

but heavy industry is about a thousand times worse than cars. I actually just had this discussion.

Say i drive my car for half an hour a day. its a 2 litre petrol engine. there's somewhere in the region of 50-odd massive diesel things running at the iron mine not far from here. 24 hours a day. then there's the power generation that goes into giving them all light etc. then there's the industry to make all the big diesel things. then there's the steelmaking plant just up the road.

Agreed, every little bit counts, but a car that makes, say 5 grams of greenhouse gasses, as compared to an industry that makes a few tonnes of the same gasses in the same period, it kinda makes you feel helpless.

Imagine, for a moment that it is a different kind of mine...

The purpose of all this energy consumption... To provide the raw materials for making your car, so you can drive it for half an hour each day, using more energy, needing more roads, needing more energy to build those roads, needing more mines for the materials for the heavy plant machinery for building the roads...

Sorry for the rant! redface
