Er, the first and 3rd quarter (joined together) of a figure 8 with a fingerspin on the way back?
After much consideration, I find that the view is worth the asphyxiation.

its not me on the vids, but i like it with the hand like that.
I don´t suppose to be it a shotgun, cause it has only 3 rotations, and he doesn´t makes a fingerspin imo.
never heard of quarters in a figur8, whats that?

I agree...there is no fingerspin.
Im still standing by by definition of "its a long arm shotgun type thingy".
Quarters in a figure 8? I think:
If you see it as one rotation by each wick on eacsh side, then I think its something about one wick doing half a rotation?
In other words...

Gerader Arm?
I suppose you could call it a staff reel viz. straight (long) arm circle with lower back, lower front and shoulder circle.

I don't know what it's called but I do that, or something like it-- it's a baton move.
- I use my index and middle fingers to get an extra half rotation (180) in the back and the front, but return to a regular wrist figure 8 in between. In staff lingo is a "rotation" considered 360 around, or 180, because there seems to be conflicting definitions.

You're right, it's not a fingerspin, just some inconvenient cutting. When I said quarters, I meant:
When you do Figure 8s, you make two circles.
Divide each circle into halves.
Each of these halves are "Quarters". (I think)

have we totally forgotten what a double figure of eight looks like?!
this is a variant of the double fig 8.
it can be performed in an alternate timing with double staves like this

cheers wing, the finger spins fit in well because it’s a natural flowing move. i know it as the “long reel” which is done with alternating hip and shoulder circles. Jillings lesson 6 has a staff reel.
i think the guy in the video has very good technique, in addition to the hand on opposite hip, he is doing a full double which I would call a hip snake. see Jillings Fig.15.2. The extreme grip is the same as used for the Forward Shoulder Roll, as in Bec and Elke’s “Fire Twirling Book”

It's been forever since I was on here, but at last check that was called a "shotgun".
Figure 8, but the thumb side tucks under the armpit and the pinky side comes back in front of the body first, yes?
If so... Shotgun. Or at least that was what it was called in the older days of HOP. No doubt Kyrain has a thread or two regaurding that move (if she's even still around, lol).

Erm........... it depends whose terminology you use.
-It is a snake (if you're talking club terms)
-It is a FORWARD SHOULDER ROLL if you are using Bec n Elke terms (which I personally think make most sense)
-It is a FORWARDS figure eight with an extra half rotation behind if you want it totally broken down.
It would be a 'double figure eight' (Bender terms) if you did an extra half rotation in the front and curled your wrist upwards. This can also be called a shotgun, a cradle, or a snake (back to clubs again) though the particular TYPE of snake would need further definition.
There is no fingerspin. The SHOULDER rolls FORWARDS to allow an extra rotation. A backwards shoulder roll would allow the other rotation to make it a double figure eight/shotgun/cradle/etc etc.

a shotgun does two full rotations (720 degrees), opposed to a figure 8s one full rotation (360 degrees).
eg. an extra half rotation twisted up on one side of the body plane, then an extra half rotation untwisting on the other side.

ok lots of confusion is about to ensue................
a figure 8 does TWO rotations. If the 'nose' or 'thumb end' starts facing down on the 'front/indide' of your body, it then does 360 degrees and passes 'down' on the 'back/outside' and then returns via another 360 degrees to the starting 'down position on the 'front/inside' again.
If you add a forward shoulder roll it will
-start pointing down
-pass through 360 degrees to reach 'down' on the 'outside'
-continue through another 360 on the 'outside'
-and another 180 until it is 'up'
- before unwinding ('pinky' end first) the extra 180
-the thumb end is then 'down' again and ready to start it all again.
This is what he is doing in the video.
(edited to take out an erroneous 360 at the end that slipped in there....)

Counting the thumb end only....................
'half circles' are 360 degrees.
'figure eights' are 720 degrees
A figure 8 with a shoulder roll, in my workings is 1080 degrees.
A shotgun would be 1440 degrees.

I agree with the fairy
(except I've never called them shotguns. Although someone explained to me that it's cos the front half is like cradling a shotgun)
I think I tend to call it "an extra beat behind" even though it's not really behind. Or a "back snake" if I'm among friends.
I get a little suspicious of terminology which groups the front and back halves together, though, as it might make us forget that each beat is a lovely little bit of lego that can be put together in many interesting ways. You can do just the "snakegunshoulderlockroll" beat on it's own, although it might make you look like a funky chicken or teapot...
And sticks with one end a different colour are really useful sometimes
