... or doughnuts or TimTams!!!! Its getting beyond a joke!! We're doing a detox and we're on a vegan diet with no caffine, alcohol, sugar, pies or anything frown . Ben-ja-men thinks the best way to get round it is by sniffing all the things he wants to eat/drink!! I don't think it helps at all - in fact even looking at them makes me nearly crack!!! His brothers not too impressed as its his stuff Bens got his nose glued to!! eek

What will we do???? We've got until a week Sat until we can eat our normal diet again!!! Looking forward to a nice, room temperature, pint of strongie B and a steak and ale pie, mmm!!! smile

absolutely, china has some of the best vegan food around. Any country that's traditionally had a religion which stipulates vegetarianism/veganism (eg buddhism) will have a good selection of vegan food (indian, chinese, japanese etc). Tofu, seiten, tempura etc are all asian ingrediants. In UK and europe we've just not put any real effort into developing vegan recipes over the last few thousand years, which is why the concept is so much more alien

Not really, there's been millions of buddhist monks/nuns in asia leading a vegan/near vegan diet for approx 2500 years. Refridgeration available to the masses is a relatively new thing, a large percentage of the world is too hot to store animal milk, hence many cultures not using it in their food and vegetarians from those cultures being one step closer to veganism. The history of food is most facinating. A lot of ingrediants we associate today with being from a certain place isn't at all. Traditional italian cuisine doesn't have tomatoes (which were imported from america and not widely used until the 19th century), traditional indian cusine chillis (imported by the dutch from south america) etc

doughnuts

You can make perfectly good vegan doughnuts (tescos jam ones were last time i checked). If you have a deep fat frier you can make some (in sunflower oil of course) and eat with fruit jam (assuming you cook at the right temperature very little of the oil is actually obsorbed). I can't remember off the top of my head if my dough recipe has sugar in it or not (if it does it wouldn't be more than a teaspoon per 12 doughnuts), but I'd sure could be omitted. Making doughnuts is fun (and fresh ones are the best), i'm just too lazy to most of the time.

you can make just about vegan anything. cupcakes, ice cream (you can use unrefined or raw sugar, don't know how stringent you are on that requirement), cookies, etc. Learning to make a bunch of vegan desserts might not be the best diet plan, though...

On the sniffing aspect, I'd say to each his own. Taste is like 90% smell anyway, so he may get enough of a 'contact buzz' off of just smelling to conquer his cravings. Sometimes that works for me.

You can't fall off the floor, but sometimes you need a chair to reach the cookie jar.
