Posted:ubblol I'm new to this so I think it's a newbie question but i was watching the "Electra Glow" demo video from divineimagination.com. I was wondering where i could get some of those glow things... the ones i like look like long glow sticks. You can find the video here. It's in the first couple of secons of the clip (there are three people all in sync with the colours red blue green from left to right). Where can i get these great looking toys?

Matt.

edit: thought i would just add the pic, makes it a little easier wink

Who are the big boys of glow retail? There seem to be so many different brands and I like things with a great feel of quality. Gooble Warming looks pretty good though!

Kate and I have two sets of electroglow poi, a set of latest gen electroglow sticks and a 2nd Gen stick, and we are really happy with their performance and durability.

Posted:Hi there! I don't make it on here much, but to clear up the confusion, the glowy things in the screen shot are simply home made UV flags! This is just the way they turned out on video (in the presence of a UV cannon, that is).

We've used all sorts of glow equipment from Gooble, Aerotech, some other no-name ones that in my opinion are just as good. There seems to be all sorts of neat new things about if you keep your eyes open. Lots of room for appropriation too! smile I think our new favourite glowy poi are the ones we got from.. arg. I don't remember.. Jill -- from somewhere (dang. Jesse was the one who ordered them). Gabe -- you know who I'm talking about?

Mmm... they are soo shiny and flashy and colourful :-D

Posted:They are the ones!! We ran into her at Exodus this year (I say "we", but it seems that it was actually everyone I went with, except me!) so I can't say what accent she has... Sounds like we're talking about the same person though. Melbourne sounds about right smile Do you know them?

They are my new favourite toy. But I fear using them too much for what happened to gabe's beautiful ones... They are sooo pretty but not quite so robust. .. sigh.

When ours arrived by post one of the battery cells was dead. I think the switch accidentally turned on in the mail. I've been meaning to suggest they put tape over the switches to prevent that when they send them.

Posted:Thanks to Jesse who emailed just before & funkwaxpuppy about the UV Flags, they look fantastic! They had me stumped, moving like poi but giving nice trails like from a staff!
Might have to set up the back yard into a big UV rig, what's the difference between a UV canon and just black lights you can buy for normal light sockets, is it just more powerful?

Posted:You're welcome! Despite the colours above, the flags are actually bright yellow, bright pink, and white. Funny how nothing looks quite the way you expect under UV!

The UV cannon is like a HUUUGE spotlight. Much more powerful than batons and can bathe an entire area in UV light from quite a distance. It takes a good 15 mins to "warm up" the globe. It's casing is about 50cm x 50cm x 50cm. They are quite expensive though. We used to hire them out but bit the bullet when we got tired of spending money doing that constantly...

UV batons (the more affordable, "fluro" tubes) are great also and a good substitute, although they really need to be quite close to where you're twirling (or doing whatever!) to gain a similar effect. A bit of a pain in the @$$ if you want a decent space to spin in...

Posted:I see the flag shape. They really are beautiful. Nice costumes too by the way. Glo Bugs are somewhat decent. I got the rainbow globugs, didn't like them all to much, unless it's pitch black, they don't look great and feel kind of weird as well. But to each his own, awesome pics.

Don't mind me, just passing through.

Posted:If you look around you should be able to find cannons a lot cheaper. They make ordinary bulbs of the same size, and the fittings for those are a lot less than the ones sold for UV, although they're exactly the same.

I managed to get my UV cannon for about 100 (US$184 AUS$242), lots of specialist places will sell them for up to 1200. I swapped it for a sweet Ibanez Bass though when I was in Japan, cause it was too heavy to bring back wink

These things can light up a hall if you have a pair at opposite ends, and if they're in smaller spaces make fluo stuff insanely bright. Just remember that fluorescent dyes gradualy loose their brightness with exposure to strong UV light.

Couple of safety tips with these things for anyone thinking of getting one:

They get really hot, so keep anything flammable at least 3' away.

Don't look at the bulb for too long while they're running, the UV will give you cataracts, that only go away if the exposure is mild. If you're stuck looking at one cause you're the DJ or someone else who can't move out the way, UV filter sunglasses work.

When they're starting up they use a huge amount of electricity, and can easily blow lower rated fuses. Also if you're plugging them into an extension cord, fully unwind it, as coiled wires with a big current going through them heat up real fast and can start fires.

Posted:OK... the double decker glowies that funkwaxpuppy was talking about are from Jill Maglio in Melbourne. She doesn't make many, and has just sent me a few sets to sell on here in Brisbane, incorporating improvements to improve durablity. So if any Brisvegans want to have a look.buy, I'll bring some to Juggle Club on Monday.

Posted:IRT Cannons. I reckon that for the wattage they dont put out the same amount of glow as a tube. I've had a lot of experience with UV lighting for trance parties and Ive seen 500watt cannons (never seen/used the bigger ones myself tho) and can honestly say that 12 40watt tubes (480watts) provides a much higher 'glow level' than 1 500watt cannon. besides that the tubes are far more flexible in the possible setups of lighting rigs and configurations and also make shadowing far less likely (put an opaque object between a cannon and the artist and suddenly you cant see the artist anymore) . tubes are far more redundant too (eg - you can smash some and your show wont suffer, break one cannon globe and thats it, unless you have a spare). Ive heard - although never experienced it myself - that if someone turns a cannon off and then on again quickly it can blow them, while this is true with normal tubes, I dont think they are nearly as sensitive.

In terms of set up and pack up tho, cannons are awesome, a lot of light with only one plug and one mounting bracket! thats a lot easier than rigging up an array of tubes smile

Im not knocking the choice to use cannons at all tho - set up right and run right in good conditions they are great - but really - Uv tubes arent like a superceded technology or anything...

Have to admit tho, Ive never seen cannons for $250AUD complete - perhaps if I did I'd be tempted to buy a pair rolleyes
