Just a random thought, the kind you have on a Sunday lunchtime after your 3rd cup of coffee and before a the pre-lunch spin.

Kevlar is almost always (and probably should always) followed by (TM) - presumably as it's an actual product made by a certain company. Does this mean there are other types of "kevlar" (or "tightly-bound cotton-knit-weave non-burny type stuff") made by different manufacturers, or does the (TM) apply to the way the material is made, not the company who makes it?

If it's the actual product that's "Kevlar" are there any other similair alternatives which are "TBCKNWNBTS" but not actually Kevlar?

Hmmmm.

Well, there are other materials with similar properties to Kevlar.

But i havent heard of any of them being manufactured into the weave we use it for.

For example there are other materials used to stop bullets and make really strong stuff.

But some really nice guy at Du-Pont decided to make lots and lots of the stuff in a loose fabric weave for us to make fire toys with.

What i nice guy

Well, for the moment Du-Pont has the patent on the material, and the process through which it is made, but there are still other such substances that are a bit different, like Nomex(TM). Apperently Nomex(TM) is actually better for wicks than Kevlar(TM) because it's known for having a very high melting point, whereas Kevlar(TM) is known for its strength, but they both work very well, and for whatever reason Kevlar(TM) is easier to come by.

I believe Kevlar is actually made in Northern Ireland... (at least, the factory is here) biggrin

I've already contacted them for the offcuts... but they raised a textual eyebrow and said 'you do what with it?!' That's probably a no. smile
