Pretty cool, man does that bloke like to pose!!! Mind you I probably would if I was that skilled with a drumming band behind me... Liked the mental breakdancey bit, specially with the 'linked' knives!

Yep there hooked knives with towel (usually) wrapped around them. The cirque show was Alegria. There spinning style is deeply rooted in tradition so yes to a point they all look the same.

Kenrom is probably at this year's Fireknife Championships right now taping more amazing footage.

This guy didn't even win... he was first runner up!

Here's Kenrom's message on tribe:

To honor of the 13th Annual World Fire Knife Championship starting tomorrow here on Oahu, I'd like to share with you a clip of last year's Finals performance by 1st Runner Up, Tuione Tovo, from Henderson, Nevada. This fellow's performance was my favorite, not because it was flawless, but because he managed to recover from a big mistake in the middle of his routine--with kick-ass style, skill and a lot of heart...

And here's a link to information about this year's competition, happening right now!

Hi MCP ~

I'm the guy you stole the link from on Tribe.net! While I totally don't mind you linking to my content and like the fact you want to share in our artform, I'd prefer you do it next time by linking to my page, instead of the mp4 file. That way, you see, I can tell how many people are seeing my vids! That's useful information for me--hope it's not too much to ask...

Yeah.... I'm sorry. It's just that if I go directly to the page, on linux I can't view it, cos on the uni computers I can't install plugins, so the only way for me to view it was to directly download it.

ge,
i actually saw alegria in boston, i didnt realize it had been discussed here before... but i have also seen dralion in hartford and varekai in NY, and mystere in vegas and i couldnt remember which of the shows it was that had the fire dancing...

the fire dancing on that link which is from the alegria DVD, is not as good as the show was in person... and i dont just mean the excitement from being second row away from the fire... i mean the actual performance was better live, it was longer and more varied than the one on the DVD was, though the DVD was released far before I saw the show, so I am betting as the show has grown, certain acts have grown as well...

I wonder if fire knife dancing has similar rules to figure skating, in so much that you cannot compete if you are part of a performance, thats once skaters are no longer good enough to win top prizes in olympics or other competitions thy go to touring shows, but once they get involved in those they can compete...

the reason i wonder is because, although the cirque show was better in real life than the dvd, i am not sure which i liked more, the cirque or this video clip... and i am wondering if their involvement with either is a testament to their abilities as fire knife dancers...

the cirque show didnt have the cool breakdancey-linked knives stuff, but it you look the knives in the cirque show were not knives just shortened staves with two different sized wicks, the wicking was flat and there would be no way to link them together...

hmmm.. just pondering... i guess i will have to watch both over and over again smile

From an old post by TeeJay:

[Old link]

I found this link:

https://www.sivaafi.org/

Which has a page on how to make fire knives... which is where I first saw the hook on the end of the knife.

https://www.sivaafi.org/Dancing.html

and if you read the history page...

https://www.sivaafi.org/history.html

you'd see that this started in San Francisco in 1946!
