ok so i use short sticks from time to time, and they are lovley, but staff has more flow to it and more having to find space to move in that baton, and for that it gets my vote smile

IMO

Staff is much harder, and has many more possibilities, its also IMO lends itslef to body flow and movement............. for people teching themself anyway, its much easier moving round a 5ft staff with some pattern, than moving round a stick less than 1m biggrin

Two staffs is where its at though wink

Staff is much harder

Which is it then? wink

For the above reason (a baton being smaller), I reckon baton twirlerising is much harder as a smaller thing goes faster.

i say baton's are nice but there is nothing better than spinning a nice staff and so i guess i will have to sway towards the staff.

I wonder what the opinions would be if you posted the same question on a baton twirling site?

i actually am even on both counts. the baton lends itself better to speed and tight maneuvers, but the staff flows extremely well... i do blindfold with both, and find the staff better suited to this. however when it comes to combining dance and firebreathing, the baton is SO much better for breathing and continuing to flow. the baton requires more manual dexterity to make it look good, therefore i love the challenge. the staff is something that requires more body control, balance, and fluidity, and that is a welcome challenge too. if i truly had to choose between the two, i honestly could not.

i'd say staff.
i've never tried batons but i think staffs round 6ft is the most lovely thing to watch, and therefore that's the thing i'd like to learn really good.

but double fire-batons isn't a shame either.... biggrin

fire is just light and heat.
it's you friend!

its not the size, its what you do with it that counts.

apparently.

personally, the "one styleness" of baton twirling means i very quickly get bored watching them.

obviously this could be my untrained eye not recognising the subtle differences in style but when it comes to sticks i like playing with the larger kind smile

need more wick on mine now though... devil

At the present I would say Staff. I am learning Staff with Susan Orr's Baton twirling videos. My best friend was making fun of the videos but I have learned a lot in the past few weeks. I am guessing that when you do the half or full throw & spin around it hurts more getting conked in the head with the staff. My head is still sore from the other day & I was afraid I had split my skull open. I also have a nasty bruise from an elbow roll gone wrong.

if the user has only one style, then yes they get boring quickly. i change it up quite a bit with all my fireprops, so that each performance set is different. this keeps the audience from getting hypnotized into a coma.

I've never thought of my 1m double-staffs as batons, they're so frikkin' heavy because I made them from steel, they're heavier than most big staffs, and have just as much momentum because of this =).

I think of baton as those utterly light mini sticks that change direction super easily and can be thrown effortlessly etc.
