2 Grenades Explode at UK Consulate in NYC

By BETH GARDINER
Associated Press Writer
LONDON (AP) -- Two small makeshift grenades exploded outside the British Consulate in New York early Thursday, causing slight damage to the building but injuring no one, officials said.

The blasts occurred at 3:50 a.m. as voters were going to the polls in Britain. In London, Britain's Foreign Office said there were no provisions for Britons to vote at overseas consulates.

Police spokesman Noel Waters said the grenades had been placed inside a cement flower box outside the front door of the midtown Manhattan building that houses the consulate.

After piecing together the shrapnel, police determined the devices were toy grenades that had been filled with gunpowder. Officers estimated that one was the size of a pineapple; the other the size of a lemon.

The blasts shattered a panel of glass in the building's front door and ripped a one-foot chunk from the planter. The department's bomb squad was at the scene and streets were closed in the area.

Hmmm. Perhaps/hopefully the bombs went off early...

Or maybe it was kids or some crazy person...

Or maybe it was some kindof secret CIA/MI5 conspiracy (or I've just been watching too many bad movies smile )

But I reckon it was probably the first one.

It's just strange how many American landmarks they'd have had to drive by/over/under to get to the UK consolate.

If people start hating the UK more than America I'm going to start getting offended. wink

"There's no proof that the consulate was the target of the attack, since several businesses are housed in the same office building."

seems to be quite a coincidence with the timing though.

i don't understand most of these kind of attacks so this one is no different.

Yep. That's cos there is no justifiable reason for anyone to deliberately attack, maim or kill innocent people. Ever.

They may think they have a 'cause', but that's not reason.

All depends on how you define 'innocent'.

I don't think the 9/11 terrorists believed that they were attacking 'innocent' people.

No, but they believed in a cause and that cause told them that these innocent people were guilty of crimes against their religion...

There are many 'causes' around the world which have inspired people to a violent struggle.

But none of them are worth human life.

There will always be causes that are worth a human life. We each just differ as to what we think they are.

Everything isn't equal though. That's the point. Democracy has arisen from bloodshed against tyrany.

Yeah, ok, I know it's outrageously idealistic and tree-hugging.

Doesn't stop it being true though.

There are millions of families around the world wishing their loved one hadn't died for a 'cause'.

You are right in the respect that some causes deem themselves more important than life... I'm not arguing with you. I'm just making the point that they shouldn't.
Nothing philosophical or deep... just the obvious point that human life should always be held in higher regard than a cause.

But can you think of several causes that are more important than someone elses life (for example, your lovely girlfriend)?

Incidentally, hope you don't get offended by that last post (am just reading over it again).

My point is... that everyone is loved by someone... whether it's a family member or friends or through a relationship... and while it is easy to say you would give up your life for a cause - you have to think of those around you who wouldn't think that cause so worthy.

I suppose it's social responsibility.
