For a while, ive wanted ot get dreadies, and i have planend to ahve them done on sunday, but last night, after i had my hair done for my school ball/formal/prom (whatever you want to call it) i started having second thoughts.
Maybe it was because my hair has never looked that good before, and it was all rpetty and definately not its usual, unruly, annoying self.
I want dreads...but i dont and i ahve no idea what to do.
Mum has offered top fork out $250 to order me some fake, synthetic dread falls from the internet if i dont want real ones.

I am COMPLETELY lost.
Can anyone tell me the ups and down of having dreads?
Can anyone tell me if they ahve synthetic dreads and waht they're like?

....help

Actually that was one of the strangest things a client asked me to do...he wanted dread extensions in his BEARD...It was about 4/5 cm long and he wanted two dread extensions plaited into it. it was a good laugh and I got a tenner out of it! it looked really good though in the end and I finished it off with a couple beads. A little imagination goes a long way I suppose! ubblol

i had dreads for a while last year when living in melb... had heaps of extensions put in (hair that i had kept from years before when i had shaved my head as well as a couple of dreads from my friend who had shaved her dreads off... they had been down to her waist...). i LOVED having dreads, however i found it REALLY annoying in melbourne because in order to keep them clean you have to wash them.. and as you know, in melbourne the weather isnt sunny and warm alot of the time. so i found that i always had a wet head which made it really heavy. i also had a REALLY itchy scalp for the first 4 months or so... which was bad and really annoying, but again not alot that you could do about it.
on the up side... i loved the look of them and the fact that i went from having hair about 10cm long to hair down to my waist in 2 days... and it was still my hair smile i also loved the smell of them, as every morning i rubbed essential oils into them. i think this was partly because i was paranoid that they would start to smell (so many people i know with dreads have smelly dreads and to me thats a huge turn off them). but i used to get heaps of my friends coming and smelling my dreads to appreciate all the yummy smells... i guess its all a part of being aware and not letting yourself smell yicky :P

but then one morning i woke up looked in the mirror and didnt want them, so i got my scissors and hacked them all off. was very cleansing, and a great experience. i am considering getting dreads again in the near future, just because they are so wonderful, and now im not living in a cold and wet environment.

my advice... do what feels right... only you knows how you feel about your hair, and how much effort you are going to be willing to put in.
dreads are alot of work to start with, but definately worth the effort in the long term.
no dreads is alot more ongoing work, but alot more versatile.. what do you want out of your hair??? :P

hope you enjoy whichever decision you make biggrin

sometimes I think about getting them when I am older, coz I want to do Outdoor Ed, and my hair is terrible for Outdoor Ed...
But like many things, not sure how they would look...

I'm a pretty active guy myself, and having dread locks isn't always the easiest thing to work around when you're that active. I play a variety of sports depending on the season, as well as physical education in school, and martial arts 4 times a week (which gets you really sweaty)...sweat can go stinky real fast, I shower every night, and was the dreads every other night fairly thoroughly...it's taking them a lot longer to tighten up and look nice this way, but I am always rolling them and giving them the love they deserve.
Dread locked people are cool, and you've always got something to talk about with them. I went to a party the other night and 4 people came up to me purely because I had dreads (and so did they) and we just had a conversation about my dreads and their dreads and such. Fun stuff biggrin

get real dreads

I've had my dreads about 8 years.
I'm only bored/ annoyed with them occasionally (mainly when I'm hot and sweaty)

Don't be afraid of ruining your hair. At the worst, you might have to cut it down to about one inch long.

My friend had dreads that were about 12 inches long and she brushed them out. Took her about 1 week, but her hair was fine after.

Then again, synthetic dreadies mean you can change the colour and length and stuff as often as your wallet allows. But they don't look as good.

Ummm. I guess my advice is, do what ya want smile

I think that you'll look cool in dreads....

altho i don't normally say tht coz i don't particularly like them...

what's even stranger... i think they tend to look better on people with lighter colored hair (is you hair naturally dark?)... but for some reason i think you'll look cool in dreads...

just remember when (if) you want to loose them, you'll prolly have to shave your head... always something to bear in mind!

whateva you decide... you're the one who has to live with it.... you must make the decision for yourself. if you're not comfortable with the idea.. DON'T do it... if you're not comfortable with the change... then you prolly need to do it!

its very unlikely that you'd have to shave you head to get rid of them. i cut mine off to about 6-8inches and managed to comb them out and my hair was fine afterwards. lots of conditioner!! Also knotty boy sells some great stuff for loosening up the dreads and making them comb out more easily

Yeah, my friend has dreads but where she hasn't been twisting them about and stuff they're practically growing out, if you look at her scalp it looks like completely normal hair with dreads at the ends.

I love dreads, but I am scared of wrecking my hair. Can't help it. Just not ready for them yet!

Does anyone else know tales of people who have got rid of their dreads easily without any hair-based trauma?
On the other hand, any tales of people unwittingly left with shaven heads? I'm interested in how hard dreadlocks really are to get out once they're in, I'm guessing it depends on type of hair and stuff too.

lots of people shave them off because they think that its the only way to get rid of them...if only they knew!!

quite a few of my friends have had dreads and have successfully combed them out. obviously the longer you have them the more difficult they are to get out. Lot of them do what the tea fairy mentioned, not dreading the roots for ages so that you can cut them out and still have a reasonable amount of hair left. It all depends on how patient you are

all this talk of dreads is making me want mine back so i'm putting my extensions back...great 4 hours of aching arms..will post pics later!

EDIT: i gave up! the pain in my sickly arms was too much. I'll have to wait till i can afford to get someone else to put them in frown

i'm sure it's possible...
but you won't get an even colour tho'!

but then again... who would want even colour in their dreads?
and imagine.. you could easily colour each dread a different colour!

yeh u can colour them, i have brown dreads and i have blonded mine a bit. With dark dreads you can just lighten them or fully bleach and then can colour them..... My friend got my highlighters out and she coloured mine in at school once and they were pretty good, didnt last long though....

If your going to color your hair do it after you have dreads put in. It will make them tighten oh so much faster. Once you dye your dreads you can never have them go back to your natural hair color unless you grow them out for a few years and vut the dyed dread off.

well, I know this is a slightly dead thread but I'm considering getting dreads and I'm just looking for support and suggestions and whatnot. read the whole thread and got some good pointers but I do have a questions. professional vs. friend doing it for you. anyone have experience with either/both that would help. a friend of mine insists that I should go to a professional but I really don't want to foot the money to do it. I want dreads and I figure if I'm ever going to do it I should do it now. also, any secrets/recommendations for keeping them clean and not smelly? the smelly part is a bit of a turn off. Thanks all!

All I know is my friend had hers done professionally and they are georgeous ubblove and she's had them for nearly 5 years and they're still gorgeous, so I'd say go pro.... I did have a different friend years ago who got her mates to do her dreads, they didn't look as good at first (as the dreads of the friend who went to a pro) but after a few years they looked loads better.

I don't think it'd cost too much to get them done and at least it's a one-off payment, not like with colours when you keep going to get them re-done at the roots etc every few months.

I'm not sure about the smell, but there's loads of products out there to help with this... there's a company called Dread Head who make a load of products for helping to create and maintain dreadlocks. https://www.hairlynks.co.uk/

Good luck! hug
