Im going to make a set of fire staffs, first time ive done it so im a bit clueless.

im going to use aliminium tubing, 20mm diameter and 3mm wall thickness, but most suppliers around me only have 1.6mm wall thickness, will this be ok? or is it too thin? confused

Mine are 1.5mm wall and i love em. Thing about having a thinner wall is its easier to bend. That means that when you do bend it - and you will - its easier to bend back.

Its much harder with a thicker wall.

i love 17mm for delicate finger manipulations,
anything over 29mm is too big for my fingers.
feel what is right, and take it!!
(paying for it too is good.)

All the fire staffs I make are 1.5-2.00mm wall thickness 25mm marine grade duralimin, I use this stuff for semi and full contact fire staff combat, as well as teaching basic staff, never bent one yet.

Thank you all for the tips. i'll go for the 1.6mm seems like it'll be fine.
I was looking for some 3mm thick but noone had any it was only 1.6, that just seemed too thin cause the staff i have at the moment is 3mm.
These are gonna be for myself, i dont think i would trust myself selling anything tongue
thx again!!

I searched for duralimin on google and hop was the first hit

[Old link]

The search function has come full circle. Is HOP the center of the netaverse?

Does anybody know where i could get some duralimin

I wonder did they cut off the last few letters to stop countries argueing about the extra 'i'.

Yep, you can bend duralimin, i'm just having several sets of s shaped six foot staffs bent, it helps if you have access to a tube forming machine bender, what ever you want to call it, find a helpful small engineering firm, I would say watch your radius(s) though, tube and wall thickness will tend to dictate cold form bend radius

generally my 3ft staff is a 500mm length of 16mm beech (hardwood NOT pine) dowel rod with 100mm shaved (narrowed) on each end to accomodate a 300mm length of 16mm aluminium tubing forced over the shaved ends.

a 6ft staff uses the same principle with approximately double all the lengths, but instead of 16mm dowel and aluminium, i use 19mm.

i pretty much use the same concept for swords as well!

EDIT:

okay to answer the actual question... the aluminium (both 19 and 16 mm) is of a 1.2mm wall!

Works just fine!

I'll try post some pics next week!
