Just curious, how do you guys view glowstringing?

couple questions to focus/start off the discussion:

Is glowstringing and poi one and the same or different? If it's different then how do you define glowstringing and seperate the two?

Do glowstringers have a unique set of moves outside of traditional poi moves?

Should the difference in each tool/medium (glowstring vs sock poi vs fire poi) be emphasized? Or should all of them be spun the same way?

How do you define/develop style and originality in poi? Should the same principles of style and originality be applied to glowstringing? Or can glowstringing have their own principles and methodologies?

Are there differences in cultural background and philosophy between poi and glowstringing?

go ahead and design a new poi head if you wish. which i believe is what NYC is working on. he made fire wick that emulates a lighter glowstick... so that he can perform more "glowstring-oriented" moves.

why do i have to quantify it? try it out and see what's better or worse. use the best tool to what you want to do.

or work backwards like me, there's already an established community for glowsticking (both freehand and glowstring). and the general standards for the dancing tool is glowsticks. most glowstringers attach the glowsticks on shoelaces. so use this as the standard... and find out what the best moves to do with glowstrings are.

I'm not meaning to leave anyone out, and I apologize for it.

What i mean by glowsticking, are those in favor of calling it such. most of you are calling what you do poi. that's fine. so obviously you place your roots amongst the poists on this site.

when people look at it the other way, call what they do glowstringing and glowsticking, and have a large community to back it up, then it becomes something different doesn't it? basicallly, many of you do not consider yourself glowstickers, or even differentiate between those that do and those that don't (read one wheel dave's argument about that) so how can you say you are part of the community that I'm supposedly ignoring?

i'm not putting down anyone, or anyone's skills, but I am making a valid point about cultural differences.

so you are saying that glowsticking and poi are different.

Right?

Could it not just be, that people from Glowsticking.com call themselves Glowstickers, and people from Home of Poi call themselves Poiers or Poicopaths.

Seems like that way to me to be honest. smile

in your oppinion, who is glowsticking.com?

you + administration?

or the community you guys built?

Jo. "

I don't know why this question is being asked, I suppose it could be seen to illustrate the tyrrancy that is my administration if I answer wrongly, but:

Glowsticking.com is a commmunity we built that is led by the administration, staff members, and the combined opinions of all the members. The longer you are on the site, the more you help by promoting glowsticking.com in your area, or by holding meetups and other events, or helping out with the forum or other hard work, you become promoted. Since we are not a company, we rely on volunteerism. The longer you are on the site, and the more you push forward our particular brand of culture (which was evolved and created through debates like this since 1999).

The reason why it works is because most people have met each other somehow in real life. So we feel a stronger bond than discussing forever on the internet our arguments and debates (and once again, not saying we are better than Poi people, I'm sure many of you have met each other before and have just as strong communities). we have seen battles gone wrong. i have seen people getting stabbed at raves, people fighting over girls, etc. We at the same time have had a lot of fun together, so people on glowsticking.com that tend to actually show up to the meetups, find a very friendly crowd that isn't exclusive at all, no matter what it may seem online.

it seems to me that you are ignoring the rest of the thread from what i said. the part about culture is a very small portion of the rest.

yes, that's ONE reason. not the major reason, nor even a good minor reason when taken out of context.

I beg to differ Dave as someone who is a part of the rave culture I would ahve to say that your seubsect is not the largest by any means.. perhaps it is the largest site on the net but that again is because what glowsticking claims to be about and the number of people there that can't voice their opinion...

I would be willing to say that there are more glowstringers in 3 states that don't follow your subsect... and that that would be exponentially more worldwide.. because glowstringing is more than your subset.. which inherently menas that anyone who does not act like wes.. is not part of your culture.. whihc accounts for a majority of the people on gs.c.. I seem to remember a poll that pointed that out.. on gs.c no less..

and as far as wraps and physics go.. you have nothing wes..

F=ma... no you can expand this formula in to an account of centrifugal force, but it doesnt operate significantly different.. now you are arguing that more massive slower poi.. lets say mass 5, a of .5 (f=2.5) is somehow different from the lighter glowstick m= .5 that spins much faster a=5 (f=2.5)... not to mention when you shorten or lengthen the chain making it even easier to close any differential gaps by altering the diameter of the circle being spun.. whihc inherently will fine tune any speed, force changes that are needed.. sure they are going to 'feel' different.. but they by no means spin any different.. the difference in feel comes in from the difference in the difference of the variables.. not the outcome.. take 20 balls worht of ball chain and monkey fists.. and you can do all the wrpa combos I do with my glowsticks.. (whic are only longer by about an 1" or so, to line up the center of mass of the glowstick with the proper bounce point of the monkey fist.. )

if it's the same then i guess we shall see in that other thread NYC started.

also keep in mind that "can" do a certain move sometimes doesn't mean much if you can't get the same effect or if it simply looks sloppy and ugly. "technically" the same doesn't not equal the same.

for example, hyperloop and orbit airwrap is technically the same, but visually it's so different that i rather call them different than same.

After all this arguing I don't really seem to get what the point of saying whether glowstringing is or isn't poi. It's all basically the same thing. If a glowstringer stopped wrapping and did the other tricks they know how to do, what would they be doing? Spinning poi with glowsticks? This whole debate seems kind of pointless. So what if a few moves can't be transferred it's still spinning even if it's all broken up with wraps. The glow people say poi moves are all the same and can't be made unique but thats not so. Once you stop spinning moves and start using the concepts you break the moves apart in to unique "combos" similar to what glowstringers do with wraps. This whole debate just seems to be stirring up a bunch of trouble.

'body movement' is a very difficult concept to transfer from poi to glowsticks.

I concur with this. My style is pretty heavy on body movement and while I can rollerskate doing anti-spin butterfly flowers with normal poi, I look like a total newb with a set of glow sticks. Now, perhaps its because I dont practice with sticks ever but I think it really does have something to do with the weight and speed at which heavier poi perform.

glowstringers do not say all poi moves are the same. we say all poi moves are the same DONE WITH GLOWSTICKS ON STRINGS due to their light weight. ICoN feels the same difficulty during his attempt.

just like how those people who say everything is transferable between all tool claims that you are not trying hard enough for the transfer.

i'm going to say that not everything is transferable, and if you "can transfer all your moves between all tools" then you must not be trying hard enough to differentiate.

--------------------------------------------------

let's for the sake of this argument say that both of the above points are equally valid. which one do you think advances the art? when all your effort is put into this "transfusion" nothing new is really coming up. all you are doing is trying to duplicate what's already been done with a different tool.

while if you focus on differentiation, you are pushing the envelope for something new. whether it be glowstrings, fire poi, or sock poi. if you look at what each tool is good at doing, focus on it, and think about these tool-specific moves, the whole "swinging stuff on string" dance will advance as a whole.

Have you invented all of the moves you spin yourself, or have you learnt any from someone else? Just like learning a new move from someone else, transfering them between toys is very valuable, because it usually throws up new variations and moves.

Also, if someone posted a video of themselves doing string wraps and link catches with fire poi, it'd almost certainly inspire lots of people to break out their poi and work on similar things. Again, spawning new moves as lots more people think about them and develop off in different directions.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.
