Help!

Just spent the last 5 hours getting rid of a whole load of nasty-pc-destroying viral exe's. But can't get rid of one hiding in my recycle bin confused

The bin's empty, but the location of the virus is C:\Recycled\Q166352.exe
Its a trojan.startpage.

Any help much appreciated

I ahve rung the pootah man

Stop doing that! tongue spank

Also, im going to suggest basic things, so they might not do anything, but its worth a shot anyway.

Navigate to c:\windows\system32 and right click on {0164A28f-C9B5-4C11-B131-4A4E158B8B36}.exe. Then make sure that, down the bottom, the check mark next to "read only" is turned off. On the tabs at the top of that window, select "permissions" and ensure that you can read/write to the file. If you cant, try changing that.

Then restart your computer, and just before the loading Windows Xp screen comes up (the black one, not the blue one where you click your name) press F8 and from this new menu, select "Safe mode".

When Xp has booted in safe mode, go back to the c:\windows\system32 folder and try to delete "{0164A28f-C9B5-4C11-B131-4A4E158B8B36}.exe" now.

Let us know how you get on with that ubbrollsmile

Also, I recommend you delete your virus vault ubblol

Navigate... basically means.. "go to"

Either go: Start -> run -> (then type in "c:\windows\system32" then hit return)

or

Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Windows explorer (then click on the plus symbol next to "C:" then the plus symbol next to windows, then click on "system32"

Any probs hun, you have my phone number! ubblol

Probably because the spyware wouldnt let you.
And with 74 infections, it would take some time writing down all the locations.
And by simply deleting files, it wouldnt sort out your registry.

You legend.

The techhy dood also came.... and he found the source, and the source of it was a virus that kept renaming itself and moving, and acting much like a buttcrack. So thats why the spyware couldnt be found, cause it kept moving and calling itself something different. eek like some of my ex boyfriends really. ubblol

You want the top three links smile

Anti virus, Anti spyware and Anti rootkit

You also want Zonealarm Firewall if you dont already have one: https://download.zonelabs.com/bin/free/1025_update/zaSetup_en.exe

Spybot: https://public.planetmirror.com/pub/spybot/spybotsd14.exe

(only run this once a week, you dont need it to run on start up smile )

NOD32 is the best virus scanner imo... i haven't noticed it slowing down my computer at all. It's not free though... unless you want it to be.

If it says its a 30 day trial, then I think you downloaded the AVG anti virus pro/ corporate edition (?), so it would be best to download the free one and install that

If you can buy me the plane ticket, I would be there as soon as I could! No honestly.. I really would biggrin

On firefox, if you press "Ctrl+F" it will open up the quicksearch thingy. Its used for finding text on a website.
You might also have the "search as soon as I start typing" option on, which brings up the box when you press a key and are not in a text box.

yep vista is rubbish, makes your computer sooo slow. "upgrading" to vista is like trading your computer in for a pentium 100.

As new viruses are being produced all the time, your anti-virus software database is out of date every new day- that goes for any anti-virus program, not just AVG.
