I've had this idea! biggrin

Like those wodden animals you get that go all floppy.

I was think of cutting wodden dowl into sections and having a string down the middle.
TIghtening the string would make it solid. losending would return to floppynbess

I wanted to do some stalls and just leave it there!
hehe!

But being slack I've never done it.

May have to buy some magic rope! bounce

wouldn't you be able to start with rope dart, and then turn it into staff? or is that not how it works?

Ive actually met a guy with poi made with this in mind. His chains were actually little metal tubes that sort of fit into one another with a cord going from the heads, through the tubes, to the handles. The handles then had a squeezable grip type of thing which would pull the cord tight making the metal tubes go straight. Unfortunately, this guy wasnt all that great at using them which left me rather unimpressed but I thought it was a cool idea.

I think I actually have a little vid footage of him somewhere, perhaps Ill look for it and post it.

I think if you got them right you could completly mix poi and staff.

You could do some nice contacty double staff moves then rol then down your arms into your hands and do poi stuff.

Maybe two poi that connect together to form one staff. :Ponders: confused ubbidea ubbloco biggrin rolleyes

The old Indian rope trick,

climb up it and disappear wink

Though, funnily enough I’ve often wondered if you gave proper (not plastic) rope that special flick, if it was possible to make the rope go rigid.

I had several styles of toys like this when I was a kid.

The problem with using these as a staff is that you must maintain tension on the rope in order for it to be rigid. I had one toy that had a locking mechanism but it would still go slack pretty quickly (ie: the brakes don't hold the tension long).

This I could see working fabu for clubs-to-poi but would need some extreme overhauling for any staff work.

It would need not only a tension holding mechanism but also the tubes would have to lock together otherwise I don't think it would stand up to the pressure of contact staff and staff work.
When my toys were tense if we did any quick blows or major pressure on one point and it folded.

Just things to think about when designing one of your own wink

I agree with Pele........I don't see the tension holding up to staff work....hmmmmmm, there has to be a way

maybe really slow contact....but even that would fold it up more than likely....

what about if you had a screw thread in the middle of the (theoretical) staff, with the string running through the center connected to the thread in such a way that joining the two sections together pulled the string taught in the center? to deal with the problems Pele talks about, you would need interlocking sections as well for added rigidity..
