hi all.
this started in the [Old link] and i was wondering, what exactly classifies a hippy.
Is it a state of mind, a fashion statement, people who just like hug, or something else.

cheers, pete biggrin

Thats just our school, chris. U cant base ideas about everyone on what happens at welli. Its just bcos every1 there is institutionalised (sp?) and think that having no opinions and stuff is cool. There are still hippies and peeps who hold their ideals dear.

My parents were/are hippies and I suppose they brought me up as one too. I am from an area that was a kind of hippy camp in the 70's and it hasn't really changed. I don't think hippies are what they used to be because being a hippy meant that you were part of huge movement that had so many ideals. Many of which have since been realised and so there is much less need for the movement to exist any more.

I would say that the closest definition you could make would be this:
A person who:
Is open to loving anybody (apart from those who make nuclear weapons and do animal testing)
Appreciates the beauty of nature
Likes to walk around naked
Likes to take mind-releasing drugs
Loves to party
Loves to dance
Loves to listen to music and wants to or is able to play the guitar (while sitting in a field with a few stoned friends)

For hippies, life is good smile peace

'Hippy' is just another target audience group for cheap, imported clothes. And occasionally we'll will use the imagery to sell goods, have fun at fancy dress, or feel like they're not really buying into all this 'work your life away' story we're happily unliving to. And in doing so the old, true, hippy ideaology gets more diluted, less powerful and more open to bandwagon hopping by legions of people with no real concept of the myth of personal freedom.

So, in answer to your question, it depends upon who you ask. Those with an interest in maintaining the status quo (which includes you and me) will tell you it's people who are opting out of mainstream culture, usually powerlessly.

A true hippy (and I think I may have met a couple in my time) will probably tell you there's no such thing as a hippie. Or anything else.

oof, that is kinda one sided... (and judgemental) this makes hippies look like a bunch of polygamous naked junkies....

I think I might be classified as a hippie, but I am monogamous, don't do drugs, only walk around naked in the comfort of my own house and don't believe that "to party" is a verb.

I'd say that a hippie is some-one who believes in a better, more natural world (and is willing to take a stand for it), is in love with love and life, believes in freedom (for all living things), enjoys the beautifull things in life (like music, nature and love) and doesn't care too much about what other people might think about him/her.

ubblol ubblol ubblol

Hey man, you were there! ( so how come you remember!) ubbloco

Actually though Skell, to be pedantic the heyday of 'coombaya' was slightly before hippie thing.. folkie, early 60's civil rights (& I think it means... come by here, like, get down here man, we need sorting out! But then the hippies came along got well sorted and forgot where here was anyway.)

OK now seriously. A classic insight into the hippie mentality is surely contained in my earlier post Heartfelt etc to the New Generation. ps I'm a hippie skilfully disguised as a 52 year old housewife... ubbangel

But there is, you will be blissed to grok, an Official Definition of a Hippy as determined by a sub comittee of the Indian National Parliament (this is for real)

Having to define what a hippie was seemed of national importance at the time, seeing as how the biways were fairly swamped with us (see earlier ref to forgetting where we were....)

So after lengthy and comprehensive submissions deliberations and confabulations it was decided that ( and this will make more sense if you know what we looked like, us magpie mufti Cosmic Traveller Citizens of the World...)

a hippy was 'a foreign national who would not wear his own country's clothes'

'a foreign national who would not wear his own country's clothes' eh? Heh,
I don't know what a hippy is, and I doubt that I would be one if there was a set definition for them. I've get called a hippy a fair bit, but then again, I get called alot less nice names too, so it just goes to show you can trust someone else to decide what you are for you :P

I think you could just broaden the list from Amber Flames' post...
A person who:
Is open to loving
Appreciates the beauty of everything
Likes nakedness
Likes to expand who they are as a person and as a spiritual entity.
Loves to love and share love

I don't think people who support animal testing or nuclear weapons should be unloved, they are just like you or me. I was brought up to be a good standing Christian. I didn't feel it was for me so I have personally studied other religions and looked at something that might suit me better. I found one constant in all of them though;
Love biggrin
Every one lives on the basic principles of love the people and the things around you.
Love is teh roxorz! ubbrollsmile

There are various shades of hippy. Some more hip than others. Excluding people who call themselves hippys (and I've met some confirmed hippy's from the 60's who are I include here). Hippy is a label people put on people different from them (all bases covered there smile ) who generally fit into any or all of the stereotypes mentioned above.

I think hippyness lives on in lots of other movements, my friends call me and my boyfriend hippies all the time (well they call us smelly hippies actually) but we just try not to do things that are bad for the environment, we hold left wing political ideas, i'm veggie and he has long hair. I'm not a hippy but i think of hem as my ancestors... I think the defining point of hippyness has to be strippy long socks and leather sandles though wink ubblol biggrin ubblol

Josie-posie, I have been a hippie for nearly 40 years and I have NEVER had a pair of strippy long socks!!!! I wondered why that constant slight feeling of alienation!

I am however thinking of acquiring SOME sort of socks so I can stuff them with rice and start waving them around my head. Maybe this is where I get my life back on track!!! biggrin

i;ve been told by numerous people that im turning into a hippy.

its probably true. im sick of my corporate job.

im falling in love with nature again.

i've gotten more into my spiritual side

i've also started wearing funny hats. thats what gives it away.

I agree with what dom said. there is a huge market there for 'hippy' culture.

I've also found (epecially in ireland) that there is a breed of hippies (i use the word loosley here, they look like hippies) that are not very nice people at all. Well they are but only if your one too. I've encountered this in numberous places and friends of mine have too. Its like they have the moral high ground or something. I dunno, cant put my finger on it but i'm telling you i definatly wasnt feeling th love and there was no sharing on any level.

For years i told everyone i was scared and intimidated by hippies bacause these were the kind of people i kept meeting.

Then i thought about it and realised that im not such a bad guy. So all hippies cant be that bad wink. plus since then i've met some truly beautiful people.

hippy to me seems to be a state of being. a receptiveness and an openess that lends itself to sharing and giving. Thats an ideal but it works on many levels I think.

Love is the law.

hear hear ditto and why keep people saying nakedness is a hippie thing?

maybe they are confused and think burningman is a hippie thing?

but anyway, ado's last definition is the one I believe in too:
