Macs are cute. They're also intuitively designed from a software perspective, rock-solid from a hardware perspective (when was the last time a Mac person had a hard drive crash? It's happened to me ONCE). Oh...and whenever one of those huge viruses comes roaring around the world? I shrug my shoulders. I have no virus protection. Why? NO MAC VIRUSES. Yup. I've heard of no viruses that affect OSX.

yeh they're rather hard to use in a few ways when you're used to a pc but alot easier in any number of ways, and my fooken ibook doesnt make any noise whereas my pclaptop is as loud as my mums snoring....and thats saying something, i was wondering why they didnt get any virus's, stupid nate

however they do make really scary noises when you put a cd in

think about it from a students point of view, you do music tech, so you need logic and the only versions of logic that are comming out these days are done for macs and macs only....i wonder why...pcs crash too much maybe?

also i've used premier, premier pro, and imovie......its safe to say that imovie is the best out of the lot and it comes fricking free with any mac these days whereas premier goes from 200-1000+....extortionists

While in theory I'd like to use a mac, I'm kept using a PC by my fondness for a lack of compatibility issues. I hate having to wait for stuff to be released anyway - knowing that loads of people already have the software I want but I'm having to wait for a mac version would really infuriate me.

I always used PC's, and still do. Gaming on a Mac is not really an option, as is downloading/leeching. It's just way easier on a PC.
But since a while I've got a girlfriend, and she and her parents never use anything other than a Mac. The very first time I was behind one I could easily use it, and it felt a lot better than any Windows or Linux machine. With quite a lot of work it is possible to make a Linux machine just as stable as an Apple machine. But the Apple is maintenance-free. My girlfriend was surprised by the fact that her iBook got slow after being on for 4 (four) months. And it only has 256 Mb memory ! Try that on any Windows machine and you probably won't even make 4 weeks without freezing and resetting...

You have to look at it this way: what’s the best tool for the job?

If you are a gamer or a VB programmer then you’ll want a x86 processor with an OS that supports the API’s and runtime environments the program was designed for. Put basically, you want Windows and the pros want Linux.

If on the other hand you just want to edit film, do graphics and typographical work, do any thing to do with audio and video, type letters, communicate over email, IM, VoIP, run open source applications, run a server, mare websites, watch porn and generally bum about then you’ll want a Mac.

Apple have taken a very good UNIX based OS (Darwin) and built the best user interface in the world around it. This means that basic users can just click about and manage their photos and music as well as typing emails and letters and chatting to people whilst the pro users can live in the terminal, IDE’s and development tools with access to all the advantages of UNIX and a modern Linux distro.

As someone who uses the 3 main platforms all day professionally, I can’t see any reason to use a PC other than to game or program for other PC’s. Compatibility isn’t an issue at all as most of the files you want to move about are open formats anyway (JPEG, MP3, AVI etc). In fact the only time I HAVE to use a PC is when someone makes a web site so bad that it only works on IE on a PC.

If I had the money, I would challenge any of you PC users to use a Mac for 6 months as your main computer and see if you want to go back. I bet you wouldn’t.

It all depends what you do tho doesn't it. I got myself a PC because I wanted a machine that could handle high calibre games and also be used for internet and design stuff. I used macs at college and had no problems with them and in my new job (start next week) I will be using macs. The difference is that at college the macs were used solely for digital imaging work and some graphics and web design work. At my job i'll be doing graphics layout work and the industry standard for graphics is mac.

Can somebody please stop the room... I'd like to get off.

Just remembered another reason why I never started using macs - I like more than 1 button on my mouse smile

I know you can get mac mice with more buttons now, but when I had to chose whether I bought a mac or a pc, the pc was the only one that you could get a decent mouse with.

Force of habit now though, as well as the collection of software (read: games smile ) I have now that won't work on a mac. I don't fancy having to get new copies of them all too, it'd be quite expensive.

Actually, thinking about it even more, I like having a floppy drive too. While it seems to be a trend starting with PCs not to have them now too, at least I know how to install one myself, I wouldn't know how to do that with a mac.

stainless munchkin, how on earth can you find it in anywayu hard to navigate a mac, everythings made soooooo easy by the help and assist options you can find on anything that you can possibly want to do

when i got my first pc i found it soo fooking hard to do anything...especially connect to the internet, took me about a day or two lol, anyway with my mac it took me step by step and it just made it impossible to mess up, and only took me about 5 mins, including entering all new informatiion and registering to a new sever

with pcs the help option has never helped me at all, theres soo much to choose from cuz its always that little bit more complicated on pcs. whereas with macs you have the assurance that macintosh have atleast seen over the developing of the softwear or whatever if not they have made it themselves so they know it inside out, and how to help you in the quickest most efficient ways, and they also have narrowed the options on help menu's down simply cuz you'd never need much help in the first place

dont know what that was about got a bit lost in the last paragragh

erm anyway for all you gamers out there i'm sure ive hear of some sort of start up pc emulater drive that works on dos which enables you to do everything you could do on a pc, use pc softwear etc. and if im mistaken its only a matter of time till some hacker dude comes up with it.......but i;m sure it exists

bottom line is macs run faster, more efficiently, and are a whole lot better looking than any pc out there cool i fall in love with my ibook more and more each and every day ubblove

I have extensively used PCs, Macs, and unix/linux systems.

while I know hardcore Mac users are basically rabid in their Mac defense, I personally HATE them. I STRONGLY disagree with the statement that Macs run faster and more efficiently than PCs. runnning the same applications on both (mostly power point, photoshop, Matlab, and IDL - interactive data language) on a G4 and pentium 4 with similar capabilities and RAM (the G4 was a laptop provided by my Ph.D advisor and the PC I bought myself because I f#@*ing hated the Mac), the macintosh crashed roughly ten times more often and ran the Matlab and IDL codes (my scientific number crunching) about 50% slower (and no, it wasn't through an emulator - it was IDL for Mac runnning on the Mac and IDL for PC on the PC). And given that Macs are significantly more expensive for roughly the same capability PC, really seem to run slower (unless it is a graphics intensive thing - and then they only crash more often), and have orders of magnitude less software written for them, I cannot see why anyone would prefer Macs.

The one concession I will make is to admit that was with Mac OS 9.x, not Mac OS 10, which I understand is significantly better. It also happens to be essentially unix based, which if you asked me, means that Macintosh has thrown in the towel and decided to just join the unix/linux crowd. And I still feel a PC running linux instead of wondows is superior to Mac OS 10, though you do have to be a shade more computer literate to manage it.

And sure Windows is MUCH more susceptable to viruses, but this is only because it is by far the most widely used platform and writing a virus to exploit Mac weaknesses wouldn't make much of a splash.

So, I know this post will greatly upset the Mac-o-philes out there, but you have to ask yourself why they they get so defensive/nationalistic about their Macs... is it because they are compensating? wink

what does Macintosh stand for?

Makes

Applications

Crash

If

Not

Then

Operating

System

Hangs

what it comes down to for me is this: I have had to use almost all operating systems enough to become a sophistocated user with all of them. Mac OS is BY FAR my least favorite. But that is just my personal opinion based off my computing needs.

All of what I said and my love of Macs is about OS X (10.2+). OS9 was good alongside Windows 9x (95/98/ME) systems but nothing to NT (2000/XP) systems. I didn't like OS9 at all, but OS X is amazing. Yes, Apple looked at the best OS on the market before OS X and found UNIX. Then they looked at how and why it worked and made an OS based on the same code that had been working for years. There is nothing wrong with this as I think Darwin is under the BSD.

I think you should give them a chance again, as you are looking at a system that is 5 years old now and that’s a long time in the computer world. The next OS X (10.4) is due out this year and it'll be way better then Longhorn that is due out 2006/7 ish.

OS X really is the most technologically advanced OS in the world, I don't see that as trying to made up for something like a short man with a big car, do you?

Also what you say about viruses is wrong. Windows is build badly. It's a mess of old code and other rubbish. It takes 2 years for a bit of code to go from the coder to the user, so even a new OS is 2 years old when you buy it. There are 100's of known bugs and flaws that haven't been fixed for years. Apple is using a very secure and stable system from the ground up so the same issues don't apply. True, the impact wouldn't be the same with a Mac virus and they don't have the pressure the MS do, but they wouldn't have half the problems windows has if they were as common an windows.

Oh dear Vanize.

Basing your ideas on system 9 when the current norm is system 10 um... less than informed? A wee bit out of date?

It is not defensiveness that makes me prefer my Mac (I have used them and pc's about 50/50 between work and home...) it is ease, interface and reliabiity. Though one could be excused for being *defensive* when you hear people frothing about Macs. It seems so unreasonable when they then admit they either don't have any experience, it is out of date! Plus, when talking about Macs, we are talking about both hardware and operating systems... I have always found that the mac hardware is stable and simply dealt with on the odd times I have needed something done... An OsX is clean and stable. (the old system 9 did crash around a bit, on OSX you might freeze an application occasionally (usually the Microsoft ones) (but not the whole system) and it takes about 3 secs to sort it out. The only glitch really is that sometimes software, people's promo CD's or whatever don't work. So we have a pc laptop downstairs that belongs to my daughter for those rare times it matters. Funny, she used be a mac hater when we had the old Sys9 Imac. Now she's got used to my iBook she doesn't want to know about the PC!

well, like I said, no experience with OS 10 to the degree I know the other operating systems, but frankly I am so done with Macs that you and all your friends are not going to convince me of much, even if OS 10 is an order of magnitude better than anything else. I've seen mac fanatics vehemently try and tell me how superior mac OS 9 was to everything else back in the day of OS 9 when I could plainly see it wasn't. They claimed it ran photoshop faster too BTW. And for some reason OS 10 wouldn't load onto the G4 laptop I had (not even the freakishly Mac happy system admin could manage it), so that about did it for me for all time right there. I'll happily stick to XP and unix thank you.

sorry if that is a harsh read - I just truly HATE macs - it isn't your fault I know... hug

I'm not surprised that the macs are faster for that test - the PowerMac G5 that's 98% faster than the baseline Dell PC also costs between 2 and 3 times as much.
