My oldest (11) wants to do Poi in the end of year talent show but i am stuck for music to use as well as what moves etc to teach him, he's got the 3b weave and butterfly, he also has this thing for speed with chicken wing arms, lol as in he goes as fast as he can while sticking his arms out. *thinks that speed and chicken wing arms would make for a great way of loosing weight* anyway the it can't be any longer than 3.5 minutes and of cause no swearing in the song (they played beaty boys last year and cut out the "porno mag" line and used Beno mag instead!!!) pref some kind that makes the audiance clap etc.
so from a Mum to a bunch of peeps who spin HELP

.............., definitely use ultra orange glowsticks (5 min high intensity) they look almost as cool as fire to most audiences, and they're perfectly suited for the timeframe. also, simple arm and leg wraps, and the "non turning weave turn" are fast and look amazing... i was really suprised at how fast i learned... butterfly to armwrap to windmill to non turning weave turn to weave turn to weave to lockouts in weave (lockout in weave: do a giant weave, but lock arms while in the giant part, allowing each poi to make a 360 while in that position, then return to giant weave. each poi passes under the oposite armpit) it looks amazing as a one time combo

lol first i would have to learn them to teach to him, lol and the glow sticks sound really cool.

i might just have to Pm some peeps later so i have a clue to all the bands your on about lol well most of them anyway.

i really can not believe how helpful you are all being, its very nice and my son thinks it fantastic too, he's overly excited and also shocked with how many people are helping, and he says to say Thankyou and it means alot. and also he went red when i told him that i had put up a pic, even redder when i said people thought he was cute.... you have made his day hug hug

Thats how children survive. they are born with a cute ability that diminishes as they get older.
Like nearly all babies are cute, even ugly ones. But how many teenagers are cute to anyone other than other teenagers of other sex and their parents. Maybe not the rents even..mm.

one that i'd love to spin to is 'firedance', from the riverdance soundtrack. it starts off really slow, though, but after a few minutes, it gets right into it. PM me with an address, and i'll send you a small, low quality copy to see if you like it.

As a music suggestion, i actually like using Rx Bandits when i spin, its got a kind of punk/ska sound i like a lot and its really upbeat, with good tempo changes for stalls and changes and what not. Analog boy is really good, and there are no curses, though i would wonder about the topic of the song:
https://www.plyrics.com/lyrics/rxbandits/analogboy.html
Anyways, if you wanna use Green Day, nothing goes better the Boulevard of Broken Dreams. It a good song that lots of people know right now, cant remember if theres anything bad in the song itself, but hey, its worth a shot. Or just use basket case, its a classic.

....i got nothing.

basket case would probably have to be censored... theres that whole bit about lack of sex bringing him down, and going to see a prostitute....

Q:What's the difference between the Great Highland Bagpipes and the Northumbrian Pipes?

If he's looking for ska, two groups that do great covers of clasic songs, Save Ferris and Me First And The Gimmie Gimmies. Both groups are known for being VERY upbeat and from the sounds of it go good with his style.

GothFrogette your son is incredibly adorable! *wants one just like that when he's older*
As for music, I have to go along with Lightning RE: Infected Mushroom. Music is clean and very trippy.
I know of one video that was actually taped at a talent show type thing, it was a glow sticker named James, most probably out of chicago. He used a really popular, techno-y song that I can't remember the name to at the moment. Kept the moves fairly basic for the most part, loads of butterflies, alternate BFs, 3 beats, turns, and the crowd went nuts on the wrap/spirals.
I'll try and find a URL for it, it may be on glowsticking.com or something but I don't know for sure. It's titled jamespoi if you already have it or know where to get it.

Make sure to pick good music to spin to, not just something they would all like. It should compliment the performance, and not the other way round wink If it does happen to go along with what he's doing, that's great smile There is nothing better than being totaly absorbed into someone's spinning.

Well done GF. Kids often love poi and the interactions that go with it. I have been watching one of MCPs Slack and the Pook video and boggling at some of the poi in that and wondering if I had started poi as a teenager would I have been able to catch poi then.
If you can downlaod it and have a look.
