Posted:which cliffhanger are you talking about? the yoda talking about training obi-wan about "communing" with quai gon jin (or however it's spelled)?

They are trying to find a way to deal with the fact that in the original trilogy, all the jedi that died 'became one with the force' IE became ghosts, but in the First Trilogy, none of them have. The problem is they still screwed it up...

IF one has to be specifically trained to see and speak with the ghosts, then Luke in the orignal trilogy should never have had the ability, because obi-wan died long before he would have been able to train Luke to do it.

IF, on the other hand, the training was required to BECOME a ghost, then Vader should never have been able to do it, because Anakin turned into vader before learning how, and died right after turning to good.

Like I've said to lots of people, this movie has continuity errors and plot holes large enough to sail a cruise liner through...

What exactly do I have to light on fire to get you to notice me?

Posted:Well said Mr Chutney!

I love star wars, the relationship between Luke and Han i believe is possibly the best relationship between characters of probably any film ever made, i love there brotherly nature.

Im not saying the new ones are great, and going back to what bing said i REALLY REALLY disagree with thsi statement
"face it you'd all be a bit bitter if mr lucas didnt release the star wars movies and just left it with the three"

this is very much not true I would have been more than happy leacing it with the original i believe and i think most others would too, or am i wrong?

Posted:I would have been happier if Lucas had made the prequels following the ideas of all the authors who contributed to it since 1997...

Barring that, I think I would be happier if he'd left it at the end of ROTJ.

The whole ghost thing, yeah they bollixed that quite nicely. The main argument seems to be that you need to be prepared to die for your spirit to be able to manifest as a ghost. This makes no sense in my opinion, cos I think Qui Gon was definately prepared to die, just as much as Vader was.

On a side note, putting Hayden Christensen in ROTJ as a ghost is one of the worst decisions ever. It completely ruins the whole "3 wise men" imagery, as well as contradicting the fact that Vader *Completely* repented before he died.

Sorry to rant, I just hate hayden!

After much consideration, I find that the view is worth the asphyxiation.

Posted:i think that bringing up the esocio-politcoal-economic rammifications of the movies is justified, because my like or dislike of the movies is directly linked to those things, and i believe other fans are the same way.

i do NOT think this original trilogy was made for financial reasons, and i think lucas WAS a genius in making sure he gets profits off of everything bearing a resemblance. He has built a SFX empire around and through the star wars saga that has had a monumental effect on hollywood and the movie industry and it took $$$ to do that, and i dont slight him for it.
I do slight him for including characters/ scenes ina film just because he thinks the audience wants thema nd just because it expands his marketing line. Including the wookies in ep3 in the way he did served just that purpose, i think. i am sure there were others but he should have mader them plainer - watching the movie their presence seemed contrived and unecessary, and slightly degrading to the intelligence of the fan base. How many star wars commericals have you seen for the last month that have chewbacca? I can think of at least two off of the top of my head. chewbacca sells merch. and he sells tickets. that is NO reason for including him ina film. I dont look down on lucas for making money off merch rights - i look down on the possibility that he edited the script with possibly merch implications in mind, that he put merch and $$$ before the storyline and relevance and continuity of the script.

and i dont think putting it in 3d is going to re-invent the 3d world. the 3d technology is already in constant flux... it no longer relies on blue/red technology... go see any 3d IMAX movie and you get clearish/purple tinged glasses, both identical colors. IMAX has caused, at least in the states, a 3D sensation and the technology is in full swing... he sint bringing anytihng new to the table as far as technology goes, he is jumping on the badwagon of MANY MANY people and companies improving the technology. and, ultimately, i dont think it is for anything besides to ensure that 3 years from now, when the 1-3 box set DVD has been somewhat forgotten, that star wars and lucas will once again be a household name. he is ensuring his immortality, both his reputation and his fiscal respectability... he lines his pockets while he makes sure not to be forgotten. Have star wars fans expressed interest in a 3D version of the movies? No. The interest is by some for a 7-9 trilogy, which wont happen. others expressed interest in a tv series, which is happening. others expressed interest in more novels and graphic novels, which is also happening. has there ever been a dinstinctive voice for 3D? i dont think so. everyone will go see... i mean, it will be cool... i will go see it... but i dont think it is necessary and i am sure i will leave it saying, "well that was cool i wish it wasnt just a money gimmick."

i dont think you can remove the socio-sconomic arguments from this thread, because they colored my viweign of the movie. if you were abvle to divorce yourself from that, then fine, but for some of us, what goes INTO the movie is almost if not as important as what is on the screen.

lucas has always been a marketing genius, probably better at that than directing, and it should be discussed. Case in point - re-watch eps. 4 - 6... the word "ewok" is NEVER mentioned... not one single time... yet everyone knows what an ewok is and what movie they originated in and all of that... because lucas is a master at marketing, and that is why.......

Posted:Oberon- my comments weren't meant to be inflammatory or argumentative- sorry if taken as such.

I think inclusion of the wookies, for example, is, as much as anything else, a nice way to bring some nostalgia into the series. Yes, people buy wookie stuff, but they only do so because they like seeing them in the films- I totally agree they were underused, but did I like seeing Chewwy- YES biggrin

As far as the 3d thing- I was a bit out of date on the tech- you're right there, BUT home 3D isn't that common place and Lucas has the loyal market and the product in the two trilogies to look at selling 3D into the home DVD market- something that hasn't been successfully introduced yet. Time will tell if its gimmicky or not, but from an interview I watched he seems to think it will be a genuinely fresh and exciting experience- Just imagine Hoth in 3D- Phwoar biggrin

I agree on the that Lucas is a mrketing master mind- I just don't see the implicit financial repercussions on the screen- I don't know if that makes me appreciate the film less or at a shallow level, but I guess thats how I appraoch it. i do get sick of films blatantly churned out with no soul, passion or creativity which have no worth artisitcally and are purely money making drivvel- take the Queen Latifah Taxi remake. The original french ones great- cheesy, funny and car geeky enough for those (like me) who enjoy the thraping of engines and the like. I can't even bring myself to see the new one- I saw trailers and the first 5 mintues and had to switch off. there is cinema motivated by money and no mistake. In that climate, Lucas is a good guy smile

Posted:ok i have to agree there... i believe that lucas main goal is to see his dream, the star wars saga, be realized, and all six movies were ripples in the pond resulting from his dream... i would never argue for a second that he made any of them, or the novels, or even possibly the tv series, with money as the primary intention, they are all extensions of the realization of his dream in a 3 dimensionsal world outside of his mind. thats cool, i respect that.

it is after the dream leaves his mind and before it gets into ours that i see more commercialism than i would like.... maybe i am just a cynic...

<<<thank GOD he edited n sync out of episode 1. they were in the big fight scene, at his daughter's bequest, but preview audiences laughed their @sses off and the nsync segment was edited out. so he most definitely DOES have legitimacy... smile >>>

but i am just wary about this 3d thing. i mean, i dont think the fans have asked for it until he offered it. and sure, it may be cool. but it is not going to be a dvd thing it is going to be a theatrical release thing, probably an IMAX thing... (I am assuming.. or would they expect consumers to buy a bunch of 3d glasses as well?) i just think it is a poor way to end the star wars saga. if his primary objective is to create and preserve a star wars legacy, then he should stop where he is. the movies are the crux of that legacy. to reissue the originals remastered in 3d just seems like he is gasping for air... it isnt a high note to end on.

if it was to be done, they should have been done before ep 3 was released, or interspersed with the 3 new ones.... not afterwards. if ep3 is the last new movie to be mad,e it should be the last movie... it shouldnt be followed by re-issues...

as far as the commercialism driving other movies, well, people see what they think is a market anfd they go for it, most often creating a subpar pile of crap that has no originality and box office and dvd sales reflect that, yet for some reason they never stop churning out this crap, most likely because there are an endless supply of pretty faces that have made it big enough toi be known but not big enough to be financially stable and it is getting cheaper and easier to make movies nowaadays and on occasion one of the steaming piles of monkey dung makes more money than it costs and becomes a hit. for every dozen stinking messes they make 1 decent film adn for every 20 probably one hit and thats all it takes ot be a fiscally endearing enterprise... normally iw ould say this is good for a free market economy... and it is, the availability to make movies has produced soem amazing independt films... but it also means we suffer through taxi and tons of other crap.... and people DO go see these films... i am sure even taxi at least broke even, if not better, and it will sell on dvd.... so unless we, as one unified voice, stop feeding dollars to this global enterprise of crap movies, they will continue to butcher the classics and let us down over and again.

on the plus side... i saw "crash" today.... and it deserves its own thread, it was amazing... go see it... an amazing, dark, visceral portrayal of the multifaceted racial economics of Los Angeles and the interconnected humanity the somehow underlies it all. A Beautiful movie, examines race and racism in ways i havent seen on film before (showing not just black oppressing white, but black, white, chinese, hispanic, persian and others, and how everyone has prejudices of one another and how those are lived out on a day to day basis...)

Posted:One thing I found in this movie was the lack of consistency about the culture. The original 3 movies had some level of consistency about Galactic culture, such as the role of droids and the status of computers and the Force in their civilization.

In this latest movie, everything just got jumbled around. I found it difficult to maintain my suspension of disbelief.

Although I do have to say that the effects were STUPENDOUS, but as Simian said after the movie, it was almost like effects porn. Great effects, lots of action, not much story, and the bit of story that there was was pretty lame.

Oh, and if someone had used simple behavior modification techniques on Anakin (i.e. not pandering to his incessant tantrums) maybe he wouldn't have ever gone to the Dark Side? Hmm? umm

Posted:Yoda bouncing...

When I first saw Ep 2 I actually looked round at everyone in the cinema in disbelief. They were actually enjoying it.

Sorry, but somehow I thought that Yoda was meant to be slightly more than comic relief as "The psychotic green bogey". I mean, isn't he the wisest Jedi? The most respectable, and revered? WHY put in a fightscene where he's flipping around going "Yaaargh!" It would have been much better for him to simply have caught the rocks and thrown them at Dooku....

Yet another example of pandering to the 10 yr olds in the audience. Ranks alongside the "offensive Jamaican caricarture" for things I hate most about the Prequels....

Posted:To be honest none of it matters to me the world will always credit people who may or may not deserve it all I'll say is I love star wars as a movie, who directed it plays some part but I have appreciated star wars since I was a baby and I didn't have a clue who George Lucas was and I still don't really care all to much. it's like people turning against Micheal Jackson and refusing to listen to his stuff because of what he's be accused of but the way I see it just because he's be accused of stuff doesn't mean he didn't make good music. If that makes ANY sence?

Posted:BTW, I think I'm with Chutney.

Lucas has the right to make a buck just as much as everyone. Oh yes, it's all very trendy to be oh-so anticapitalist, but let's face it, the man has a right to make a buck and to make a profit from his own work. There are those who believe that art should never be sold, but then again, that would have made many of history's greatest works of art impossible. Michaelangelo could not have done the Cistine Chapel in his free time. Similarly, Lucas makes his living through the STAR WARS trilogy.

If you walk into a film and all you see are the socioeconomicopolitical issues attached to the making of the film, you SERIOUSLY need a couple of shots of Jim Beam before you see your next movie.

Posted:i have great respect for art. if you make money off your art, that is amazing. if the goal of making money influences your art, thats not cool. thats all i mean. when i walk intoa film, i do so to enjoy art. whether or not it is a type of art i enjoy, i can still respect it as art. but when it is blatantly obvious that the purity of the art has been comprised solely for fiscal reward, thats kinda lame.

yoda's fighting in 3 is better than in 2. he looked very cgi in 2 and the fight scene was more comic relief. in 3 he looks a lot more realistic and the fight is a lot better.... though i dont believe... yoday should have won that fight, there is absolutely no reason for him not to have won it... i wont give anything away so i cant say more, but i was disappointed with it, just because yoda is definitely even more bad@ss than that.... seriously...

and a couple of shots of JB wouldnt make me overlook the dilution of art, it would just make me louder in my dissatisfaction... smile
