Hey there,
I usually wire in my car stereos myself but have run into hiccups with putting in a Kenwwod in my Suby. confused Does anyone have any ideas on how to figure out which colour does which (eg. power remote speaker) when they aren't usual. I dont have alot of time or money and just want my stereo in.
Any ideas would be much appreciated....
Thnaks in advance

how odd.

Are you sure someone at the kenwood factory isnt just having a laugh, and has colour coded all the wires wrongly?

Can you not just go through the possible permutations of the wires, and see whih one works?
Or will it blow up if its in the wrong way?

Thats a question you will know: Does getting the correct polarity on speakers really actually matter? As they appear still to work either way the red ad black wires go.... confused

if i had a heap of time to go through the wiring it would be ok.:) I'm trying to do this the lazy way. It's not the wiring on the Kenwood, its the car wiring... speakers aren't much of a prob but I need to know which is positive, negative, and the remote wire on the car. It's not red+ black- etc as usual.
Kenwood is normal wiring, car isn't
I guess I'm just going to have to take some time with a multimetre or something to figure it out. Just thought I'd try this first

How much of the system do you have? If you have the head unit then you'll only need to power if from a standard 12v cable (I assume).

The head unit should lead to a xover and amp that in turn lean to the speakers. This should all be standard speaker cable.

Your amp should have lables on it telling you what all the ports do.

Or are you bridging 2 amps or something? Even if you are id should be quite easy.

Can you give up more info please?

Sym_ It's just a basic stereo, no amps or anything. Does that mean I shouls be allrite just putting in whole new wiring? And if so, where should I wire it from, the fuse box or something better? Sorry, I know a little bit but I'm not a qualified installer or anything tongue redface
Unattractive Cranky Old Freud (love the name!) I have a Suby Legacy T/Turbo GT Legacy 10 yrs old though, but I like it tongue

(an add on)
If you wire up the speakers wrong you don't get the bass out of them that you should, polarity is reversed, bass is reversed.... I like my music loud at times.. & yes I'm working on $$ for an amp etc

UCOF, I fiddle with stuff. I've blown up quite a lot of things in the past so I know how to fix them my the fact the I know how to really break them. wink

Anyway, I don't want to put off nite owl...

I guess you have 7 wires coming from your head unit right? Maybe 6 maybe 8 but I've only seen ones with 7.

They will be:

FL sp
FR sp
RR sp
RL sp
Power +
Power -
RF

Now, you really don't want to get the power ones on the speaker ones (I don't know what this would do actually) but they should be easy to tell apart from the others. Maybe red and black? or blue and brown? They might be thicher than the others.

as for the others, just try them out. set the fader and balance to one speaker and go for it. The RF is the only one remaining!

Good luck

Can you not get some sort of adapter to plug the wires dircetly so all the difficult bits have been done for you!!?

I know AUTOLEADS do them for uk spec cars, not sure about imports though!

nite owl, do you have an update? Or have you blown the whole things up after taking my advice? I hope not. If you're really unsure, take it to someone who can talk you though it in person.
