Spinning wool is one of the most dangerous things you can spin, so it's not really something to be taken lightly. Look around there are a bunch of threads with constuction of use of them, and there are a few different ways to go about it, but as always safety should be your top concern. Far more of a concern than normal since they aren't just throwing sparks, its blobs of molten steel, that can and will start ground fires, burn people, drift in the wind, and fly at least 50-100'

There is a pic in my gallery of me spinning steel wool if you want to see what it looks like

umm

I would say that spinning great white sharks, covered in barbed wire, on rusty chains, whilst wearing a magnetic suit of meat was far more dangerous...

But it is indeed still very dangerous.

Go for it, Pitman. No guts, no glory. But, be safe. Be sure you spin it on a beach or an abandoned parking lot, as it will collect on the ground around you rather quickly, and you don't want to be standing anywhere even remotely flamable. Keep in mind that you have about a good 20 -30 feet radius of constant bombardment around you too.

Tie it securely with wire. Bailing wire works great. You'll want to make it real tight. Then, just soak and light like you normally would, and enjoy the fireworks. devil

BE CAREFUL!!! smile

We create a new world order, one of beauty and grace, color and sound. There is nothing more vibrant or full of life than the roar of fire tying knots of light around your body.

Soak wire wool???

I find soaking it makes it work less efficiently...I just light it straight and it works wonderfully.

I've just fininshed doing a wire wool workshop with a small group that i informally teach, I would say regarding soaking, if your going to use additional fuel use only a small amount, really only about a small cap full on each, about 10 or 15 ml is usually sufficient.

Safe distances, we were using 100 meters, that would be around 300 feet

I think it depends on how much wire wool you use and the cage type you are using as to how far is classified as a safe distance (also the speed of the spinner)...my small cages that I use 20 meters is quite safe but with one of the other twirlers who use a larger cage I noticed the area he had sparks flying was quite substantially lareger than mine...I would have said he should have been at least 50 metres away.

Dude, chill. Just buy a sample pack of steel wool (different grades) some bailing wire, and a six-pack of beer (or relaxant of choice)

Then, EXPERIMENT. Here's a good thing to try first. Go out and gind the page that describes how to make terry-towel wicks. Instead of all terry-towel, use just a little bit of terry towel and mostly wool. Try 00 grade first. Soak in white gas. With a little bit of rag+white gas, you're almost guaranteed a good burn. After a while, you'll figure out how to pack the wool so you don't need the rag or the liquid fuel.

It's really not that hard, but it will take a little while to get a really good spark show. Then, once you know what works, you can try to replicate that with some sort of cage that you can re-use.

There isn't much to learn to be honest. Just spin a pair of wire-wool heads as fast as you can and it'll look spectacular. What is difficult is learning how to do it safely. As Lurch pointed out, this is not something to be taken lightly - molten lump(s) of steel landing on yourself, spectators, dry shrubbery etc. needs to be avoided. If you're going to give this a go, do it on the sand on a beach. If the ground's wet, that's definitely going to work in your favour. Make sure any spectators are upwind - they're not going to be impressed if you start showering them in molten steel! Wear good thick clothing - I was wearing jeans and hit myself once. The wire wool burnt right through them, but thankfully didn't get as far as my skin.

Spinning wire wool is potentially very dangerous... but it does look very cool wink Be careful and have fun!

When I saw the links you posted I did think that it was a refreshing change to the usual 'do a search...' response to newbie questions that seems to happen on HOP so much, and basically a very nice thing for you to have done.

Obviously not everyone has appreciated it, and I wanted to basically say that it was a good thing, and it would be great if more people took note of it and perhaps made similar efforts.
