SO..

I was reading the thread about Mushrooms, and someone (I assume from England) said the word 'Ming' this brought back memories from us living in England. Espeically from a girl who I worked with who decided everything that was to do with Mushrooms was 'Mingin' - meaning really really horrid.

As a person from Adelaide, South Australia we as Adelaidians use the word - 'HEAPS' (meaning -lots) and we use it heaps, in fact I have been laughed at from Myst hug and others for using it too much at times while overseas. smile

So I am wondering what other words do the ppl of HOP know that are local to them, and what do they mean...

Wow, I was actually talking about this at dinner tonight. My friend thought it was strange that we say "wicked" a lot. As in, "That was wicked awesome." Or something.

But, I also am a fan of:

wigging out - getting crazy and stressed

and

sketch - really weird or creepy

I also say P.S. a lot, which isn't really the same thing, but my friend agrees that it's a little strange since I'm not writing, and I don't usually say if after anything. I just like the way it sounds. smile

However, one of the girls in my dorm is from Virginia, and I make fun of her a lot, cause she says that things are "yum" or "tight" or that she's "sweatin' "
them, all of which confuse me a lot. biggrin

lol @ Immortal Angel!

I dunno if it's Sydney vernacular specifically, or something I picked up in corporate land, but I say "no joy" a lot. ie "We had no joy on getting that room booked," "no joy on server issue yet" etc. I always feel like a tosser when I use it, but it's versatile and efficient. smile

I use wicked a lot. Sweet, Nice, Fully.

Fully is also very versatile:

"fully" = agreeance
"fully" = acknowledgement of other person's statement
"fully?" = expression of disbelief
"fully" = superlative

Josh has an expletive that cracks me up! Sooo Adelaide. hehehe. I haven't heard him use it for years though.

lol nice Flash!
Personally I pick up bits and pieces from talking with people all over the world.
biggrin I'm a walking example of multi-culturalism!
I use Nice for just about everything.
As well, the Canadian youth can use right for every 3rd word...it was on an interview for 60 minutes. In 70 words or something, he said right 23 times ^.^'
It's also very versatile biggrin

The phrase 'eww' for nasty or unpleasant has entered into my college recently, and the word 'like' as a conjunction. For example:

And it was all, like, weird and eww!

'Pervert' has also become a term of endearment where I go to college which is baffling when you think about it lol!

Oh and the term 'well' is always used a lot down here (Portsmouth/Havant area) to express how good something was:

It was well good

And 'awww mayte' is another one a lot of people down here use lol. It's funny when you think about all the weird things people say.

Thanks to Little Britian (tv show) , "yeah i know" is said a lot. The definition is pretty self explanatory except that it's said a lot.

Also thanks to Little Britain - yeah but no but yeah but...

Is said a lot in my local town.

Also i hear people calling each other "ho" (as in whore) a lot. They say it in a friendly manner to each other which mystifies me.

And lastly i hear, "What it is right..." at the start of sentences.

edit: I told someone i wasn't feeling "too shabby" and they didn't know what i meant. I thought it was well known, well anyway it means bad.. so saying Dont feel too shabby means you dont feel too bad.

The phrases used in Nathan Barley (Uk, Channel 4, 10pm Friday) are creeping into my friends' conversations, including such greats as "It's well mexico", "It's totally futile" and "it's well cheeks", all of which make absolutely no sense in context but generally mean good.

"Take that, math!"

Aimee, I loved the article biggrin Especially the last bit!
I'm glad I read that before I go there and pull the same stuff she did lol!
I heard a comedian from Canada talking about his experience as a bartender in UK.
Here (north america) Fag is a really rude insult for a homosexual.
The comedian, being fresh out of high school, where homosexuality is the most hated thing, hearing the phrase "Can I bum a fag?" of course meaning "Can I have a smoke /cig?", went nuts over it ^.^'
All in all I don't think Canada has to many local vocals... other than our infamous "eh".
And it's true, we don't say aboot, nor are we all lumberjacks or eskimos. Yes, some of us are curlers and hockey players, and we are proud to be the only country where Pond hockey is the national passtime of children of all ages.
