Granted its hardly a major operation but this tuesday morning I am going to a surgery to have a cyst thats inbetween my scalp and skull removed, the doc is only giving me a local anaesthetic and is gonna cut it out, its about the size of a malteser maybe bigger so nto exactly huge, however im a bit panicky about being awake with this happening but prob more panicky cos i hate needles and dont wanna get an injection in my head, has anyone here had any op's while they've been awake? do you really not feeling anything?

I suppose it'll probably depend on the anaesthetic that's being used, but I always felt what was going on. There was no pain whatsoever, but I could still feel them poking around, it's a very strange feeling indeed.
I wasn't allowed to watch though for some reason, I was quite curious as to what they'd be doing.

I got local anaesthetics for wisdom teeth, for people trying to fix something in my knee that they couldn't find, for removing a mole and for a hockey injury on my head! I'm the QUEEN of local anaesthetics!
Basically, it won't hurt that much to get the injection, maybe like an insect sting and a bit of pain as the anaesthetic is injected. After that, it's all numb, you do feel something's happening but without the pain. It's actually quite funny!!! I could feel the needle scraping over my knee and it was really creepy but didn't hurt.
The only thing I really disliked was that I couldn't see how they fixed the cut on my head because they thought I'd be sick if I watched it in a mirror. Instead, since I was 7 and my dad had come in to see I was okay, they had to get HIM a chair and a glass of water
Oh, and then there was the time when the dentist said "the arteries in the upper region of the mouth are a bit different for different people, so if it really hurts that means I've hit one and you have to let me know", and that second it hurt quite a lot so I tried screaming with his hand in my mouth, and the anaesthetic just hit me all at once! It was very cool, like a trance, and the nurses were all running about in a panic opening the window and putting my feet up and bringing me a wet cloth in case I might faint
(Sorry... got carried away there. Being a scientist AND a diabetic and therefore used to needles makes those things funny to me. I apologise to all normal people)

Its quite interesting really once you get over the excruciating pain
My dad had a lump the size of a golf ball cut out from his stomuch under local anaesthetic. He said it hurt like buggary, but i prolly shouldn;t be telling you that

I can't remember to much of the details, but I know I didn't feel any pain. You could feel them poking around a bit, but I was to happy to care.

I thought it was quite bizarre that they wouldn't let me watch, I could still hear everything they did, from the clipping of the pliers to the almost popping sound of the piece of nail being pulled from the nail bed. I also had mine chemically burnt out so the nail would never grow as wide as it was before.
The last one was almost worth all the hassle because I had to wear sandals to work, they went really well with my suit

Will, the most painful part about the whole thing will be the initial injection of anesthesia into the area. They'll probably use lidocaine or something else ending in "-caine" ("bupivacaine," "novocaine," even "cocaine" [yes, it's a local anesthetic]).
After the initial injections, you'll feel a burning, then a pressure for about 30 seconds...and then...nothing. You can feel that he's doing something up there, but that's about it. He won't proceed if you can feel pain because then you'd jerk away (it's a reflex to withdraw from pain) and he'd hurt you.
If you are truly absolutely deathly terrified, you might call in and discuss this with someone there. They can give you a light dose of an oral sedative/anxiolytic (anxio=anxiety, lytic=something that destroys). A common example is diazepam (VALIUM) or lorazepam (ATIVAN). When I had my LASIK eye surgery they gave me some diazepam and, believe me, I didn't have a care in the world! (You freak out about needles; I freak out about things getting near my eyes). If you do opt for a sedative (and he agrees to give it to you) then you will need someone else to take you to and from the appointment and you should not eat for six hours prior to the case.

eww... and there was an article in the paper the other day about people who wake up during general anaesthetic but are still paralysed....... this perhaps isn't helping.... but just think, it could be worse, it could be that.. at least with local you can still scream....

one of my mate's dad's had to have an operation on his breatbone inbetween his ribs, cause it was somehow growing downwards and would've eventually punctured his stomach, and because of a medical reason i didn't ask much about, he had to have it done under local anaesthetic, and all they did was just told him to bring a walkman or discman with a load volume control so he could listen to music for the hour or so that it took.
so if they're using local anaesthetic, you shouldn't feel a thing.

Thanks a lot I suppose I remembered only the adrenaline from what I read on the bottle because it seemed more weird to me than lidocaine or whatever
Actually I should've figured this out myself but it seems ages since I did anything theoretical at uni, and I suppose I've specialised a fair bit since then and forgot most of the general pharm-tox stuff

I blacked out at the dentist when they gave me a local... It turned out my blood pressure was so low the adrenaline effected me in an adverse way. So now I have to ask to have anaesthetic with out adrenaline. It didn't help me with my fear of Dentists either. I haven't been back since. I come out in a cold sweat just walking past the dentists door!

I had a mole removed from my wrist which the doctor thought was cancerous (it wasn't) under local....I was freaking out because I am scared (petrified actually) of needles.
I didn't watch what was going on and seriously felt absolutely nothing.

When I fell on a metal lined step I split the inside of my mouth open between the front of my lower jaw and the bottom of my lip (around the chin area). I had to have stitches for that, they gave me the local. Bovril Monkey's right, its really strange that you can feel it. Incidently, my Dad didn't think it was as bad as it was, aestheticaly it looked like a small cut, not the big hole it was so he took me home and made me dinner, I can remember howling in agony when trying to eat vinegary chips.

persoanly NO cause i am a big wuss and unless your counting giving birth.lol which we are not.
How ever my grandad had both knee replacement opps under epidural, he said it sounded like a wood work shop and could feel all the tugging but non of it hurt. I think your mainly worried about the needle, needles of that kind scare the hell out of me too, although when you have kids you get used to them very quickley but as you know i am being completely put under for the work on my teeth to be done. But i am sure you will be fine

Thanks for checking up on me Birgit but my operation didnt go ahead I went up up the stairs sat on the bed got all ready n then the doc said oh your still ill (ive had the mumps or something) and he said he didnt wanna do it while i was still ill, what a bastard, he could have mentioend if i was ill not to come a week ago when he saw me!! grr
Thanks for checking up on me Birgit but my operation didnt go ahead I went up up the stairs sat on the bed got all ready n then the doc said oh your still ill (ive had the mumps or something) and he said he didnt wanna do it while i was still ill, what a bastard, he could have mentioend if i was ill not to come a week ago when he saw me!! grr

A friend of mine woke up when he was having an ear operation. They cut his ear off, then he woke up and saw his own ear. They put him back on the general again.
But, a bit gross, having to see your own ear in a petridish....
