*puts hand on her heart and sings*

Australians all let us rejoice
for we are young & freeeee!!!
With golden soil & wealth for toil
Our home is girt by sea
Our land abounds in natures gifts
Of beauty rich and rare,
In history's page let every stage
Advance Australia fair
In joyful strains now let us sing
Advaaaaance, Austraaaalia fair

*starts mumbling*
Hmmmm hmmm hm something something else
Hmmm hm hmmmm mullet cut
the thing hmmm hmmm der hmmm, de dah
the flummoxed really rock
de dah, de dah, in rainbow shorts
the colours fade in wash
blah blah, hmmm hm, blah blah hmmm hmm
*sings really loudly cos she has reached a bit she knows*
advance australia fair
I think it is the joyful bit
advaaaance, austraaaaalia fair

Does anyone know what girt is? And why exactly our land is doing it with the sea?

It was a day for screaming at inanimate objects.

heh heh, Rozi we dont do the hand on your heart thing, when we sing our anthem. We sorta stick our hands in our pockets and scuff our feet and scratch our noses when we dont remember the words.....

heres the best aussie anthem ever!

"Australians all love sausages,
for we are young and free
We've Golden Soil and weath for toil
Our home is Dirt by sea"

(makes a lot more sense than girt...)

I'll be honest with you, the ceremony was as boring as poo. I would have been far more interested if they had done something nice and symbolic, like pricked our fingers and mixed a droplet of our blood with the earth upon which we tread our feet.

Citizenship doesn't mean to me a whole bunch of middle aged white blokes saying "aren't you lucky to be Australians now?" It means the sense of belonging with my family and friends, the sense of ownership in having a say. And I don't need the piece of paper to tell me that.

Any other suggestions for an Aussie citizenship ceremony that would actually be meaningful?
