Posted:And I am extremely disappointed with it.

This is nothing that Malcolm had control of. He did a great job putting it together as always, and actually, I like the music. I think he found some music that fit the feel of the spinning presented.

Actually a couple of the songs I want copies of.

However, I am saddened by how many people have not at all paid attention when people have suggested no less than hundreds of times to wear colors and have a light other than fire.
Fire burns down and we can no longer see what is going on, and as a viewer it is not only frustrating it is annoying. There are many videos on there I did not watch, and will not watch because of it.

I am disappointed by the sheer amount of fire. It seems that the virtue of spinning itself is being lost in the "Look what I can do with fire" mentality. Truthfully, I feel that many of the videos would have been much more dynamic with colored Glow Stix, LED or UV reactive presentations.

In the end there is alot of talk on these boards about all of these crazy, costumed, dynamic shows that are out there, and that none of them showed up again was disappointing as well.

The level of spinning, from what I could see, was quality. I am impressed to see how far it has come from COL1, without the same people submitting. I enjoyed what I could actually see.

I find it interesting to see the "trends": minor throws, ground effects- esp. standing in a circle of flame and buzz saws were rampant. Hard and fast seems to still be the speed of choice.
Fire fingers and hoola hoops the "alternate toys". Despite the huge distance between the geographic locations, the same stuff appeared. When I watched it I seriously felt like someone had gone behind the scenes and planned it out that way.

Perhaps on 6.

(And before I get asked, I do not submit to the video comps because I *personally* feel it is inappropriate for any member of the HoP team to do so.)

Haven't seen it yet but it has always been a bummer that a lot - most infact - of my favourite spinners are never on there.

I think I am starting to understand this now though.

Often the peeps that have become obsessed enough to take their art to a high level, end up trying to make a living, a sideline, or a large contribution to the community like a website. Those who succeed or even just try hard are seriously limited for time.

Can't remember the last time I practiced my poi properly. Well over a year by now...

I have similar qualms about the amount of fire and lack of UV. Although if it was all aerotechs I would still be peeved about it.

You realise though that now COL6 (if malcolm makes it) will be all UV.....

Who are your fave spinners Jo?

A lot of mine were on COL3.

Although I do agree with what Pele said about the wearing colors and other light sources.
I've seen many videos where I can't even see the spinner and all I see is two floating balls. Although it might be cool once or twice, when it happens all the time, and the balls are barely wisps of flame, it gest annoying. Half the fun of watching other people is being able to see the other people doing what they do best biggrin

Posted:IA, non-fire does not need to be expensive. Comets, Buzz Poi (or equivalents there of) are lovely as well. Traditional poi.
Some multi colored stix look awesome. A nice set of bright, large flags...yummmmmmmm.

Jo, oooooh I hear you on that practice thing. As a matter of fact, for me it was a year ago. I even remember where I was (because I was in another state for business). Strange that, and how time flies.

Cantus, that is funny. I don't think anything on here will ever be all UV though.

I think it is an interesting point that IA brings up that fire is thought of as being cheaper. I never thought of that though.

Who were your favorite spinners from 3?

So far I think COL3 actually had the most diversity, some of the best spinners and was the most interesting to watch.

Jo, don't forget, several people who get really serious burn out on it and move on to other things. I have seen that a couple times.

Should be interesting to see what happens when COL10 comes around! lol

Suffice it to say that it was a sarcastic note about how I really appreciate the fact that I made observations about how people did not follow the submission guidelines for lighting, and about the trends in the arts, *NOT* about what was good or wasn't has been reduced to a grade school style accusation of something that wasn't even written.

Actually, my overall answer was technically grow up.

*angry*

Malcolm is the only one who can close this, and I really want him to.

even some of the low lit bits were ok because they had nice circles going on, and some of the vids were really beutifull. the range of lighting effects has given me good ideas for my own vids.

I cant remeber all the good peaples names, but it was cool, defo. special mention to GG cos its much better than her last vids. and to the staff jugglers, that stuff is rad.

Posted:I can hear what your saying Pele, soonish im making a coloured staff. but got take into account that alot of spinners spin with fire, and it is realy cool to watch. mind you the clothing should be colorfull, and background lighting should be enough to see the spinner. ive said this somewhere else, cant remember where, but when spinning fire the focus is taken off the performer and put onto the fire, which can get pretty repetative.

Spose i reckon that balance is all it needs, a relativly even amount of fire/uv/glow/flag/colours. i havent seen Col5 yet, so i cant say how unbalanced it is, but it sounds like its mostly fire.

Hat off to all those invloved with the COL vids, and a special thanx to Mal for organising it all!!

And I think Col 5 was fantastic.

It may not have been as diverse as some people wished, but it showed our community from around the world and what they have been up to.

Malcolm can only work with the material he receives... if anyone wants something different, they should submit that.

Take care

Posted:Pele, I agree with what you said about overuse of fire. It is very beautifual and impressive to an audiance, but the COL videos are largly watched by fellow spinners who are generally not so impressed by fire, as most do it themselves. Fellow spinners would be more impresed by fantastic moves and effective video making (lighting, editing, costuming, location, etc.), and it would be good if people realized this in the future.

But I still found COL 5 fantastic. I am very isolated from spinners in by area, most everyone i know who spins I taught myself, so it is very interesting to me to see what other spinners from around the world are doing. The COL videos area source of inspiration and moves for me, and i think that overall the good videos outweigh the bad ones.

About the COL videos, am I imagining this, or did Malcolm post that he would not be continuing the COLs? I thought i read that he was planning to have a similar contest without the prize in the future. If any one else saw this, or knows anything else about it please let me know. I would like to try to get a video together for the next competition.

and erm.. looks like you have some time to get a video ready, as the vid submission deadline [june 30th] has already passed for col 2005.. shrug

Posted:It may appear that there is plenty of time, but, from experience, I'll say that there's some wierd kind of time distortion effect that comes into play for those who decide to put in an entry.

The flow of time accelerates in proportion to the closeness of the deadline, and this accounts for the numbers of people who, despite the best of intentions, fail to get their entry in.

My advice, if you want to be in COL 6, is to start filming now smile

Posted:Wellll...in some ways, yes, I agree - It is more nerve wracking spinning on film.

But then given that you're filming it specifically for the purpose of (hopefully) getting it on to a video to be sold internationally, if you aren't prepared for this - why are you doing it?

Considering people are paying money for this - it would be (amongst other things) polite to say the least to practise your set before hand. Maybe not choreographing the whole spin, but at least working out before hand what you want to do with it, how to shoot it, lighting etc etc.

The harsh way of saying this would be; keep the nervous, limited, dark and un-polished releases for free downloads...

In my opinion if people are paying for something which they could get for free - you have to make it worth the money.

Yes, not everyone can get on the net to download free vids (many of which I feel exceed the COL submissions) - but if you look at similar "fan" release videos - e.g. surfing, skateboarding, parcorps/free-running - you just don't see shoddily filmed, badly lit and (being uber-harsh) in places poorly executed clips.

I'm in 2 minds about the COL series really - if it's a "community" DVD (i.e. by and from the HoP community) which is what I've always seen it as then this implies that it's being entered by people who do have net access. I think it does show the range of people on the boards of varying levels, from around the world.

But then....

If it's intended for the worldwide spinning community (in terms of retail market this is...) then I don't see it's doing itself any favours by putting out below-par (in terms of quality of shooting if nothing else) videos...

one wheel dave: quite a nice flow

amazing rubberheart duo: lovely throws, lovely music & surrounding (my mom is from finland!), nice flow as well

brother & son: what else shall I say, we all know you won that col5, wonderful outstanding technique, wonderful flow, very precise spinning, but at the moment your playing quite a differnt style.........like your meditating style of spinning!

wonderful teacher, wonderful person!

and 2bags: nice way of spin 4poi at the same time, btw: you made me laugh, my compliments!

I liked many of them, but for different reasons, some have a better video, some better music, some a nicer flow, some a better technique......., but in the end the winner is my favourite!

I see people on the boards discussing very complex and advanced moves, but i dont see as many of these spinners on the COL videos as i would like. Im not saying that those with good flow, style, and filming techniques arent interesting or important, i would just like to see more examples of very good technical spinning. I can't wait to get an entry together for the COL7
